Tigania East Member of Parliament (MP) Mpuru Aburi has accused Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza of misleading the public over alleged derogatory remarks against him which were captured in a video played at the Senate during her impeachment hearing.

Aburi spoke on Friday, November 10 as Governor Mwangaza returned home a triumphant woman having survived a second attempt to remove her from office by impeachment in just 10 months.

Responding to the intense criticism he received after the video was played in front of Senators, the lawmaker denied making unprintable remarks in the Meru language which were allegedly targeted at Mwangaza.

He added that he would escalate the matter with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) over defamation claims, adding that he allegedly has the entire video of everything he said that was depicted in the clip.

“I have faith in all women and I’ll go to the DCI to write a statement for defamation over what happened at the Senate. The video that was played at the Senate during the proceedings was edited. I have the full video on my phone showing everything I had said.

“I did not say anything about molesting women and I cannot because I have a wife. Therefore I’m not stupid, I don’t have psychological issues, I am fresh,” he angrily defended.

Aburi further argued that he was in no position to make demeaning remarks against women because he is a parent himself to daughters and daughters-in-law.

He further demanded the Governor to apologise to him, claiming the video was doctored to satisfy her interests and those of her supporters.

“What was played at the Senate was an act of disrespect and every Kenyan knows it. I want an apology from Governor Mwangaza for spreading lies to members of the public and I am ready to go to Meru to write a statement so that Kenyans know that it was a lie,” he demanded.

As she was giving her submissions during the ongoing impeachment trial, her defence team played videos in front of Senators indicating explicit remarks by several politicians in Meru County in a relentless push to have her impeached.

The video which captured Aburi’s sentiments left Mwangaza haunted and unable to explain the context when asked to do so, to the point she broke down in tears.

"Because it has been done by so many men and now they are ready. As Members of Parliament, him being the leader to do that to me. And he has recruited so many young men for the purpose of that Kiberi movement together with the deputy speaker of this House," Kawira recollected herself and submitted before the Senators.

The alleged remarks by MP Aburi attracted massive condemnation in the Senate with analysts indicating that it was part of the reason that Mwanagza was saved for a second time.

Furthermore, civil society groups demanded legal action taken against the MP, with one of them, the Coalition Against Sexual Violence (CSV), urging the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to investigate him.
