The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced that a section of the busy Mombasa Road will be closed for one week.

In a notice on Friday, December 23, KeNHA advised motorists to expect traffic along the road heading towards the Nairobi CBD to be diverted temporarily for seven days.

The diversion will commence on Monday, December 26 (Boxing Day) and last until the New Year (Sunday, January 1, 2023).

"Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), wishes to notify the General Public of a temporary traffic diversion on Mombasa Road towards Nairobi CBD as you approach Subaru Kenya starting from Simba Corp Motors to Panesar Centre.

"The temporary diversion will be in place for a duration of seven (7) days, from Monday, December 26, 2022, to Sunday, January 1, 2023, to enable the completion of remaining works along the section of Mombasa road during this festive season," KeNHA stated in part.

The authority added that motorists will be guided by traffic signage that will be installed on the road and are advised to adhere to the temporary speed limits when approaching the construction zone and passing through the temporary diversion.

Even so, several roads across Nairobi are expected to have reduced traffic as Kenyans travel upcountry for the festive season.

Meanwhile, it is an entirely different ordeal along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway as heavy traffic snarl-ups were witnessed from Friday morning across different parts of the road.

Videos seen by Viral Tea showed mass overlapping and traffic jams in parts such as Kimende and along the escarpment overlooking the Great Rift Valley.

"The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) wishes to notify motorists plying or planning to use the Nairobi - Nakuru (A8) Highway of a traffic buildup between Gilgil town and the rail over road bridge as people travel for the festive season. Motorists are advised to exercise road courtesy and are further urged to avoid overlapping as it will cause unnecessary delays," KeNHA warned.

About five major highways across the country were paralysed with others such as Kericho - Kisumu, Nairobi - Eldoret, Mai Mahiu - Nairobi and Thika Super Highway also affected.

"But Kenyans we lie too much, we have been singing the whole of 2022 "There's no money, the economy is terrible", right now there is heavy traffic along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway. You have come out with your cars to travel upcountry to show off," Warui John tweeted in Sheng.

“Plan your journey with this in mind. There's an accident just before Rubis Kijabe on Nairobi Nakuru Highway. National Police Officers are on site and clearing it,” Ma3route warned the motorists.

One of the motorists went on to suggest an alternative to escape being on the road for long hours, revealing a shorter route through Thika Mangu Flyover Road, Njabini, Ol Kalou, Lanet and Nakuru.
