UPDATE: Kenya Power has announced that the restoration of power supply across the country is ongoing following a widespread blackout that occurred on Sunday evening.

"Several areas in Nairobi City and its environs are already back on electricity supply. These include parts of Ruaraka, Embakasi, JKIA, Parklands, Donholm, Umoja, Huruma, Westlands, Syokimau and Dandora. Sections of Kisumu, Busia and Siaya are also back on supply.

"We are working to restore normal supply to all areas as soon as possible. We apologise to all our customers for the inconvenience caused by the outage," stated Kenya Power.

Kenya Power has confirmed that the latest power blackout plunging millions of homes across the country into darkness on Sunday was caused by a faulty system.

The notice was sent roughly 30 minutes after a widespread blackout was reported countrywide.

"We have lost electricity supply to various parts of the country due to a suspected fault affecting the power system.

"We are working to restore normalcy within the shortest time possible. An update on the restoration progress will be issued in due course. We apologise to our customers for the inconvenience caused," the statement read in part.

Yet again, the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi was affected by the blackout where the power generators failed to pick up.

Sunday’s outage began around 8 PM and was the third national power supply failure within the last three months.

During a similar outage on November 11, it took over 12 hours to restore power in most parts of the country.

On August 25, Kenya Power confirmed the blackout, stating that the outage was caused by a general system disturbance.

"We have experienced a general system disturbance thereby causing a major outage. Our technical teams are troubleshooting with the aim of restoring supply at the earliest," read the report from Kenya Power seen by Viral Tea.

"Sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused. Thank you for the continued partnership."

Following the August blackout, a Cabinet meeting saw President William Ruto direct the review of the power distribution system in Kenya.

"Cabinet regretted the total electrical grid outage that led to a nationwide blackout on Saturday last week. Cabinet consequently directed the review of the power distribution system in the country, to ensure that the unfortunate occurrence shall not recur," read the dispatch in part.

Following the blackout, a blame game ensued between Kenya Power and Lake Turkana Wind Power, with the latter denying the former's claims that they caused the power outage.

LTWP had stated that they were forced to go offline and stop generation following an overvoltage in the national grid which caused the power plant to go off automatically to avoid extreme damage.

On Monday, August 28, Energy Cabinet Secretary (CS) Davis Chirchir stated that the Ministry was yet to restore LTWP to the national grid, adding that they were trying to find the cause of the problem.
