A man police had been pursuing for weeks in connection with the brutal murder of British businessman Campbell Scott has died by suicide.

According to police reports, Samuel Musembi Kamitu had been hiding in a friend’s house in Dandora, Nairobi, claiming he needed a place to rest. On Tuesday morning, his host left for work without noticing anything unusual.

However, upon returning in the evening, the friend found the door locked from the inside. After forcing entry, he discovered Musembi unconscious, with foam coming from his mouth and blood oozing from his neck.

Musembi was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), where he succumbed to his injuries. Preliminary investigations indicate that he first attempted to poison himself and, when that failed, resorted to stabbing his neck.

He was a key suspect in Scott’s murder, allegedly driving the vehicle that transported the Briton’s body from Pipeline, Nairobi, to Makongo Forest in Makueni, where it was found dumped in a sack filled with pineapples.

Two other suspects, Alex Mutua Kithuka and Albunus Mutinda Nzioki, have already been arrested and are assisting investigators. Meanwhile, authorities are still searching for Bernard Mbunga Mbusu and Alphonse Munyao Kilewa.

Just a week ago, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) had published images of three suspects wanted in connection with Campbell Scott’s murder, including Musembi.

In a statement on Friday, the DCI appealed to the public for assistance in locating three individuals tied to the killing of the British businessman, a senior director at FICO, who arrived in Nairobi on February 14 for a business conference.

Scott was reportedly lured into a fake meeting before he disappeared on February 17. His killers are believed to have used his credit cards in Nairobi, Voi, and Mombasa. One of the fugitives, Mbusu, has a criminal record dating back to 2018 when he was arrested for involvement in a blackmail and extortion scheme.

The brutal murder sparked widespread reactions online, with many questioning the motive behind Scott’s tragic death. However, emerging reports later suggested that he may have fallen prey to a ruthless criminal syndicate that preys on wealthy tourists and expatriates.

According to sources, the gang operates by luring victims through online dating platforms, with foreign men being among their primary targets. Using social media and dating apps like Tinder and Facebook, the group enlists female accomplices to arrange meetings under the pretense of romance.

Unsuspecting victims arrive at a predetermined location—often a rented apartment—where they are ambushed and tortured for financial information. In extreme cases, they are killed.
