2023 top Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) candidate, Michael Muturi Warutere from Riara Springs Academy in Nairobi is set to enjoy a three-day fully paid holiday to Mombasa.

Warutere, who became the latest national celebrity after scoring 428 marks, was awarded the handsome holiday package during his interview with Citizen TV on Thursday night, November 23.

Viutravel, a local travel company powered by the country's largest TV station, handed the gift to the top candidate who was joined by his father during the interview and representatives of Riara Springs Academy.

“At Viutravel we award excellence and so we appreciate that you have done well. This is a three-day fully paid holiday to Mombasa. Go and enjoy yourself for what you have done. We appreciate you with this and we wish you all the best,” said Annette White, who is Viutravel's Guest Relations Officer.

Details regarding the Mombasa trip are still scanty, as more sponsors, donors and well-wishers are said to be reaching out to Warutere and his family with multiple offers.

The candidate who emerged top amongst 1,406,557 of his peers, utilised the live TV interview to offer advice to pupils and students regarding the road to success.

“You have to balance your time properly. Because you cannot always be on your books.  Have time to study as well as time to exercise so that your brain can process information properly and in the end you will achieve success,” he disclosed.

Warutere scored 428 marks out of a possible 500, moments after Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ezekiel Machogu announced the top student in the national exams on Thursday, November 23.

He bagged outstanding marks including 90 per cent in Mathematics, 85 per cent in Kiswahili, 85 per cent in Social Studies and Christian Religious Education (CRE), 84 per cent in English, and 75 per cent in Science.

Speaking to the media, he expressed gratitude for the guidance received, attributing his success to the support from both his school and parents and even though he found the Science paper a litmus test, he noted that Kiswahili shocked him as he had never scored highly in the subject before.

While acknowledging the challenging nature of the exams, the top candidate in the country encouraged his peers not to lose heart, emphasizing that failure in KCPE does not mark the end of the journey.

“This is not the end of the road for those who failed this KCPE exam. Who knows, they might be the ones who will pass the KCSE exams and if not, they can build themselves by exploring their talents,” he said.

With aspirations of becoming a Software Engineer, Warutere aims to pursue his secondary education at Mang’u High School.

His father, Samuel Muturi, commended Riara Group of Schools as well as its teachers for their role in Warutere's achievements.
