Fwaro Makokha Robinson, who emerged top with 431 marks alongside Otieno Lewis Omondi Glen in the 2022 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams has spoken.

In an interview with Citizen TV on Wednesday, December 21, hours after he was revealed to be the top student out of 1,244,188 candidates who sat for the examinations. Makokha revealed that being the top student in the country was something unexpected for him.

He added that he used to be amongst the top 10 students and had expected to be amongst the top 10 but not the top student, but nonetheless noted that the results were joyously received by his family and his school, Christ the King Primary School in Bungoma.

Makokha went on to state that during his previous exams, he used to be amongst the top three, thus he had no worries that he would do well in the exams.

"No, I had not expected to be the top student as the results came out suddenly. I had expected to be amongst the top 10 but being the top in the whole of Kenya, I had not expected it completely but the results have been received with joy by my family and the entire school and on my part, I'm very happy.

"When I was doing my internal exams, I used to come out as number one, two, three around there so I had to maintain it so I had no worries of being in the top 10 but to be the top is something I had not expected," he said.

He added that he scored 425 marks on the last exam prior to the KCPE examinations, meaning his 431 marks were an improvement.

Makokha expressed his excitement as well as that of his family, including his parents following the release of the results by Education CS, Ezekiel Machogu.

Regarding the tips he used to pass the exams, he added that he used to pay a lot of attention since he and his fellow classmates knew they had very little time left in school, thus he had to be attentive and listen to the teachers and fellow pupils regarding what they would be tested on in the exams.

"I was attentive in my capacity and it was important to work together with the teachers...I would like to tell those who didn't get their results that it is not the end of the road and that there are a lot of opportunities to improve, and they should also keep working hard as well as putting God first in their prayers and they will succeed," he encouraged.

He added that the subject he loved the most is Kiswahili as he was doing very well in the national language subject.

"I would like to be a software engineer because I had a lot of interest in working with electronics and assembling things that can help people to improve their livelihoods," he added.

Owing to his exemplary performance, Royal Media Services (RMS), the parent company of Citizen TV, rewarded him with an all-expenses paid trip to Mombasa courtesy of Viutravel, powered by the TV station, alongside Omondi.

"The travel company will reward the top two - Makokha and Omondi - with a tour to Mombasa. The three-day holiday will be fully catered for," News Anchor Mwanaisha Hamadi stated.

Machogu announced the results at Mtihani House on Wednesday, December 21, though he did not reveal the name of the student as has been the norm with his predecessor, George Magoha. Viral Tea later established that the two aforementioned students had tied at the top with 431 marks, with media houses urging members of the public to share the results of their top-performing relatives and friends.

In March 2022 Magoha named the top students and their respective schools in the KCPE 2021 exams whereby Bruce Magata Mackenzie of Gilgil Hills Academy emerged top with 428 marks.

The other students in the top 10 categories were from Makini School, Holy Family Misihu Girls, Emmanuel Academy, Kitengela International School, Rofin Field Junior Secondary School, White Star Academy, Stopping Stone Preparatory, Nyagwa Primary School, PCEA Mwimbi Boarding Primary School.

Candidates who scored 400-500 marks were 9,443 (0.77%), 300-399 were 307,756 (24.94%), 200-299 were 619,593 (50.22%), 100-199 were 296,336 (24.2%) and those who scored 1-99 marks were 724 (0.06%).

Of these candidates, 620,965 (50.32 per cent) were boys while 612,887 (49.67 per cent) were girls, a clear indication that the country has achieved gender parity at the primary school level. In the 2021 KCPE, 1,214,031 candidates sat the examination.
