A Moi University bus was on Wednesday, March 27 involved in a road accident while ferrying some of its students to Mombasa at Kimende along the Naivasha-Nairobi Highway.

Reports indicated that several of them, being Kiswahili students, were injured after their bus was involved in the accident.

The university bus had veered onto the side of the road and overturned, a matter which resulted in injuries.

Locals had arrived at the scene to aid in rescue efforts towards the students and drivers before the arrival of emergency personnel and police.

Some of the students were further seen jumping outside the bus through the windows as residents attempted to lift the bus to save those who may have been trapped underneath.

No casualties had been reported yet and neither the police nor the school's administration had yet to issue a statement on the accident.

It was not immediately established what caused the accident, coming after 11 students from Kenyatta University lost their lives in a road accident involving one of its campus buses.

The accident occurred on Monday, March 18 in Voi, Taita Taveta County, with the bus also revealed to be heading to Mombasa.

The driver of the university bus was overtaking a fleet of motor vehicles, and it was raining heavily at the time.

“The bus skidded to the right side of the road as one faces Mombasa direction, which prompted the driver of the truck to avoid a head-on collision, hence hitting the left side of the university bus,” the police report reads in part.

As a result of the impact, 10 students died on the spot while one succumbed to injuries upon arrival at the Moi County Referral Hospital.

The tragedy prompted Transport Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen to order National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) officers back on the road to enforce regulations alongside traffic officers.
