The mother of murdered Kiambu businessman George Mwangi revealed details of the phone conversation she had with her daughter-in-law, politician Gladys Chania before he was found dead in Kieni Forest, Kiambu County.

Priscilla Wanjiru revealed to the media that she had received a call from Chania, who unsuccessfully vied for the Kiambu Woman Representative seat in the August 9 general elections, informing her that her son had gone missing.

Wanjiru thus urged Chania to report the matter to the police station so that detectives could begin the search for him.

"The wife called me to inform me that he was missing. I urged her to file a report at the police station for officers to take action," she stated on Sunday, October 16.

The mother added that Chania had called her back hours later revealing that her son's body was found in Kieni forest.

"Nine hours later, the wife called back and informed them that the deceased had been found at Kieni forest. She had been called to identify the body," she added.

Still shocked by the news of her son's death, Wanjiru added that she was surprised when the wife became the prime suspect in the murder and was detained by police, noting that the couple did not seem to argue with each other on several occasions.

"I have never heard them bickering but since they stay far away and at times he would stay for long without paying a visit, it would be hard to know," she stated.

Wanjiru added that she was last with her son two days prior to going missing at a family function where they were celebrating a birthday party of his grandparents, noting that he did not show any signs of suspicious behaviour nor any signs of fear.

"We met two days before, to celebrate the birthday of grandparents who were marking 90 years. We greeted each other and he said he is going to his Mang'u home. That was the last time and I did not see any problem with him,” she added.

The family has since urged police officers to expedite investigations to unravel the mystery behind the heinous murder.

Detectives guarding the deceased's home in the Mang'u area had recovered the murder weapons, blood-soaked curtains and clothes. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) had initially stated that Chania was believed to have masterminded the murder of her husband following her discovery that the father of their three children was having an affair with another woman.

The detectives deduced that the deceased’s wife was suspected to have been assisted by a newly employed casual labourer and other accomplices in committing the cold-blooded murder.

George Mwangi arrived back in the country on Tuesday, September 13, from Rwanda, where he was a contractor. An astute businessman with interests in real estate, the deceased had sired three children with the main suspect with whom they had been married for over 20 years.
