The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has announced that it will take action against a matatu driver who was captured on a dashboard camera threatening a motorist with a machete (panga) on Sunday, October 16.

In a video seen by Viral Tea, the driver was going about his usual journey before the matatu belonging to LBO Travellers LTD sacco plying the Baba Dogo-Lucky Summer route tried cutting off his path while frantically accessing a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) stage on the left.

The motorist tried swerving to the left to avoid colliding with the matatu, which resultantly charged towards him, seemingly on a mission to knock the vehicle out of his way.

Watch the video:

The two cars both stop to a halt, with the conductor seen hurling insults towards the motorist before the driver emerged bearing the panga, ready to attack him.

One of the passengers seated at the front of the matatu could be seen trying to stop the driver from harming the motorist, but his efforts bore no fruit in stopping the irked driver determined to harm him. It remains unclear what happened as the driver vanished from the view of the dashcam.

A Twitter user named Malik shared the video, which drew the attention of the NTSA, who asked him to share the details of the matatu to assist in investigations and for action to be taken.

Viral Tea has learnt that the vehicle has been impounded, but the driver remains at large. The incident took place near the Alsopps matatu stage between Outering Road and Thika Road.

NTSA had recently taken action against a Nairobi matatu whose tout was captured on video filmed dangerously hanging on its door by arresting him as well as the driver.

The ordeal was highlighted on the Sikika Road Safety Facebook page which also uncovered the details of the matatu belonging to Umoinner Sacco registered as KDH 112E dubbed Opposite, as well as the identity of one of the touts.

"Following a video that went viral on social media depicting two bus conductors dangerously displaying acrobatic antics on a moving public service vehicle, we wish to inform the public that the suspects including the bus driver have since been arrested and are in custody pending arraignment on various traffic violations.

"The National Police Service condemns such reckless and irresponsible conduct by the bus crew that exposed passengers and other road users to danger. Such conduct will not be condoned and stern action will be taken against anyone in contravention," the National Police Service (NPS) stated in part.

The duo were punished and charged Ksh130,000 cash bail upon their release, with the driver ordered to pay Ksh100,000 cash bail or Ksh200,000 bond and the tout Ksh30,000.

They were also charged with dangerous and reckless behaviour while driving, and failing to wear the specific uniform while on duty. Drivers are mandated to wear a blue uniform at work while touts are expected to be dressed in a maroon uniform.
