"Nairobi Fire Fighters have contained a fire from an explosion that occurred involving a gas tanker at Stage Mpya in Embakasi along Outering Road.
"No casualties have been reported. Our emergency teams are on standby,” St John Ambulance stated.
An Embassava 14-seater matatu and the tanker were reduced to charred remnants, bearing witness to the intensity of the blaze.
Eyewitnesses recounted the harrowing moments leading to the explosion, noting that the matatu had been devoid of passengers, with only the driver inside, attempting to manoeuvre the vehicle after encountering a roadblock.
“The matatu did not have any passengers, only the driver who was moving the vehicle after being stuck, that is when it exploded. Both drivers for the matatu truck are unharmed,” detailed an eyewitness, offering a glimpse into the sequence of events that unfolded amidst the chaos.
Immediately after the blast occurred, a number of area residents and business people could be seen milling around the scene. Motorists and residents were, as a result, advised to evacuate from the area immediately for their safety.
Nairobi Police Commander Adamson Bungei revealed that immediately after the incident, police blocked the flow of traffic along Outering Road, as they were focused on evacuating the area to avoid a disaster.
The cause of the blast or the value of the damaged property was yet to be determined by the time of publishing this article.
This comes after six victims of the tragic gas filling plant explosion at Mradi area of Embakasi East constituency, Nairobi that killed over 10 people and injured 300 others sued two Cabinet Secretaries and state agencies over the matter.
The six are seeking justice, accusing the national government of negligence. In a petition they filed, all residents of the affected area, two agencies and Cabinet Secretaries were put on the spot for violating the residents' rights and allowing the unlawful erection of the gas plant.
Among the Cabinet Secretaries sued included Soipan Tuya of the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry as well as her Energy counterpart Davis Chirchir.
State agencies sued include the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) and the County Government of Nairobi as well as the Attorney General. Also sued was the gas tank owner.
In their separate affidavits, the victims argued that no appropriate action was taken to address the aftermath of the explosion since most businesses operating near the plant were destroyed.
The victims want the court to give an order for compensation for the damages experienced from the tragic incident.
