The National Assembly has approved a motion extending the recruitment period for appointing the Chairperson and members of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) by 14 days.

Moving the motion on Wednesday, April 2, Minority Leader Junet Mohamed emphasized the need for the IEBC Selection Panel to conduct a thorough vetting process.

"The Selection Panel is currently interviewing shortlisted candidates for the Chairperson and Member positions, but given the tight schedule, additional time is needed to complete the process adequately," Junet stated.

He underscored the importance of ensuring the recruitment aligns with constitutional principles, including regional balance, youth representation, and inclusivity.

"To guarantee a fair and transparent process, we must allow the Selection Panel to carry out the interviews within official working days and hours," he added.

The motion, which received broad support from lawmakers, is in line with paragraph 6(2) of the First Schedule to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Act, CAP 7C, which permits an extension when necessary.

Deputy Majority Leader Owen Baya backed the motion, stressing that the Selection Panel needs more time to conduct the rigorous vetting process.

"This extension is crucial. Every Kenyan who applied deserves a fair opportunity to be vetted. The interviews have been thorough, and we must support the Selection Panel in concluding their work properly," Hon. Baya said.

Speaker Moses Wetang’ula termed the motion as procedural and in line with due process. "This is a procedural motion, and it is in order," he affirmed.

Junet called on Kenyans to trust the process, assuring that only credible individuals committed to upholding electoral integrity will be appointed.

"We seek to appoint commissioners who will stand for the rights of Kenyans and maintain the credibility of the IEBC," he asserted.

The 14-day extension will take effect from April 28, 2025, allowing the Selection Panel additional time to finalize interviews, make recommendations, and submit the names of qualified candidates to the President.
