Nyandarua Senator John Methu, a close ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, on Thursday, April 3, reacted to the heckling of National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah in front of President William Ruto.

Earlier, Ichung'wah, a Kikuyu MP, encountered a hostile reception while he accompanied the Head of State during the launch of the Last Mile Connectivity at Ol Kalou Town, amidst President Ruto's tour of the Mt Kenya region.

Nyandarua residents initially listened to the president's address without much resistance, but the mood shifted once the microphone was passed to Ichung'wah.

The restless crowd, in videos seen by Viral Tea, openly voiced their disapproval of Ichung’wah's speech, interrupting him with jeers and whistles, momentarily bringing his address to a standstill.

"Let me tell you. No one can shout me down. I cannot be intimidated," Ichung'wah can be heard saying after the first round of heckling.

Undeterred by the backlash, Ichung’wah attempted to engage the audience with a greeting, only to be met with even louder boos.

"Mr President, the people of Kware know affordable housing is here, and all the work (placing cabro in affordable housing units) here should be given to the youth," Ichung'wah added in an apparent attempt to appease the crowd, who shouted down his address in protest.

Overwhelmed by the deafening jeers from the massive crowd, Ichung’wah eventually conceded and handed back the microphone—but not before delivering a final remark. He said, "I want to tell you, President Ruto, that here in Ol Kalou and the whole of Nyandarua, no one can intimidate me."

Responding to the heckling, Methu on his X account stated that the residents of Nyandarua had zero tolerance for 'immature' politics, adding that no amount of money could sway the people of Nyandarua into backing leaders during the presidential tour in Central Kenya.

"Kimani Ichung’wah, I’m so sorry, but Nyandarua doesn't like immaturity. Nyandarua is the home of true defenders," the fierce critic of the current government said, adding, "The two thousand that we were given was only to listen, the rest of the leaders were to pay separately."

Following President Ruto’s announcement of his visit to the Mount Kenya region after nearly six months, Methu has been leading efforts to oppose the tour. He argues that Ruto’s visit will only bring more empty promises to the region’s residents.

During a public event in Naivasha earlier this week, the senator, who has repeatedly labeled Ruto a ‘liar’, claimed that the projects the president plans to launch are merely recycled from previous administrations.

"Someone cannot lie to you for one hour; he should say what he is saying for one hour and go, because lies can spoil our ears. I hear that he will go to my home in Nyandarua, and I know he is going to launch projects that were from the past," he said.
