Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen on Tuesday, April 8, defended the government's decision to withdraw former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi’s security personnel, as the latter had earlier claimed.

Muturi, while addressing the press on Tuesday morning, alleged that the decision to withdraw his security without his knowledge was a deliberate attempt by the current administration to intimidate him over his outspoken political views.

He stated that he became aware of the security withdrawal last evening, and upon reaching out to the relevant authorities, he was told the move was linked to his continued criticism of the government.

“The reaction from the government has been the immediate withdrawal of my security, which happened last evening. My security personnel were instructed not to report to duty because I am fighting the government,” Muturi claimed.

"I said it is okay because there are very many Kenyans without government security, and therefore, it is not something that should worry anybody."

Nevertheless, the former Cabinet Secretary insisted he wouldn’t be intimidated and vowed to keep holding the government accountable, regardless of the contentious move.

However, Murkomen's remarks in response to the matter paint a different story. According to the Interior CS, the alleged withdrawal could have been a scale-down, as he was no longer a member of President William Ruto's Cabinet.

“That is a simple and small matter that should be handled by the IG. If it’s escalated to me, I will address it as per the law,” the CS said when responding to inquiries on the matter, adding, “We scale down the security assigned to officers once they vacate the office. It’s normal and it applies to all, even me, if I leave the office.”

However, the Interior Minister said he would follow up with Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja for clarity on the matter, noting that such issues fall under the IG’s mandate.

Commenting on the situation, Murkomen dismissed claims that the former Attorney General’s security was pulled due to his outspoken criticism of the government.

Muturi was removed from the Cabinet two weeks ago and replaced by Mbeere North MP Geoffrey Ruku, whose appointment is pending National Assembly approval after being nominated by President Ruto.

Justifying his decision to fire Muturi, the President stated that the former Public Service Cabinet Secretary was let go for abandoning his duties without official authorization, something Muturi later denied.
