Five more Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers who were attached to the defunct Special Service Unit (SSU) were arrested on Wednesday, October 26.

They were arrested at the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU) Headquarters in Nairobi and were being investigated for conspiracy to commit a felony and abduction.

They include Corporal Joseph Mwenda Mbaya, Corporal David Chepcheng Kipsoi, Constable Stephen Luseno Matunda, Constable Paul Njogu Muriithi and Constable Simon Muhanga Gikonyo.

The group has been detained at Industrial Area Police Station, the Makadara police division's Headquarters and will be arraigned in court on Thursday, October 27.

"Please be informed that the police mentioned above officers from DCI Headquarters formerly from the disbanded Special Service Unit (SSU) were arrested on 26/10/2022 at Internal Affairs Unit Headquarters and placed in custody at Industrial Area Police Station," the IAU's report read in part.

"This is a result of IAU inquiry file no. 194/2022. To be arraigned before the court on Thursday 27/10/2022."

Four former SSU officers were arrested on Saturday, October 22 as part of a team of 10 officers summoned by the IAU the day before to respond to claims of their involvement in the disappearance of two Indian nationals.

The two Indians namely;  Zaid Sami Kidwai, and Zulfiqar Ahmad Khan are said to have been kidnapped days leading to the August 9 polls. Also abducted alongside them was their driver Nicodemus Mwania.

They were aiding Ruto's campaign team in coming up with various strategies, according to Digital strategist Dennis Itumbi. They arrived in Kenya in April as part of Ruto's ICT team but disappeared in July after being kidnapped outside Ole Sereni Hotel off Mombasa road.

"This was one unit that was literally used to kidnap, assault, maim and kill innocent people. They targeted those who supported the election of Ruto as President," Itumbi stated.

"Zaid and Ahmad were just good people who became my friends and in the process connected with some in our team. They visited Mombasa, Homabay, Mara, Nyama Choma joints, and damn they loved our dance joints too," he described the duo, adding that the two had invited him to India but he promised to visit after the polls.

Itumbi claimed that the duo lost their phones during a night out before returning home, prompting him to search for them at their usual location but did not find them, and they could not be reached.

"Just the other day, I finally got to know their painful last moments in the hands of people whose only mission was to ensure Ruto does NOT become President even if it means killing people," Itumbi said.

The four, including the head of the disbanded SSU, Peter Muthee, were arraigned before the Ruaraka law courts on Tuesday, October 25.

Last week, bones, clothes and belts believed to belong to the two missing Indians and their Kenyan driver were transported from Aberdare forest to Nairobi for forensic analysis as investigations into their disappearance continued a notch higher.

Investigations narrowed down to 12 officers who were part of the disbanded SSU, believed to have participated in the abduction of the three men. At least 21 officers were interrogated by the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU) at their headquarters in Upper Hill, Nairobi last week.

The SSU unit was disbanded by President William Ruto after it was linked to enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings. It was formed on December 31, 2019, after the Flying Squad was disbanded by the former director of DCI, George Kinoti.
