UPDATE: The Head of the disbanded Special Service Unit (SSU), Peter Muthee, was among four cops arrested by the police on Saturday, October 22, over alleged involvement in enforced disappearances.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) also impounded two vehicles said to have been used by their colleagues in the said abductions.

Four Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers who were attached to the defunct Special Service Unit (SSU) have been arrested.

The quartet were arrested on Friday, October 21, after they were grilled by the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU) for a whole day.

Reports have indicated that they were charged with kidnappings, abuse of office, and conspiracy to commit a felony.

Others indicated that the four were part of a team of 10 officers summoned by the IAU on Friday to respond to claims of their involvement in the disappearance of two Indians.

The two Indians namely;  Zaid Sami Kidwai, and Zulfiqar Ahmad Khan are said to have been kidnapped days leading to the August 9 polls. Also abducted alongside them was their driver Nicodemus Mwania.

They were aiding Ruto's campaign team in coming up with various strategies, according to Digital strategist Dennis Itumbi. They arrived in Kenya in April as part of Ruto's ICT team but disappeared in July after being kidnapped outside Ole Sereni Hotel off Mombasa road.

"This was one unit that was literally used to kidnap, assault, maim and kill innocent people. They targeted those who supported the election of Ruto as President," Itumbi stated.

"Zaid and Ahmad were just good people who became my friends and in the process connected with some in our team. They visited Mombasa, Homabay, Mara, Nyama Choma joints, and damn they loved our dance joints too," he described the duo, adding that the two had invited him to India but he promised to visit after the polls.

Itumbi claimed that the duo lost their phones during a night out before returning home, prompting him to search for them at their usual location but did not find them, and they could not be reached.

"Just the other day, I finally got to know their painful last moments in the hands of people whose only mission was to ensure Ruto does NOT become President even if it means killing people," Itumbi said.

The officers have been detained at an undisclosed location pending their arraignment in court on Monday, October 24.

The SSU unit was disbanded by President William Ruto after it was linked to enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings. It was formed on December 31, 2019, after the Flying Squad was disbanded by the former director of DCI, George Kinoti.

Some of the cases that the SSU handled include; armed robberies, kidnappings, motor vehicle theft, sale and distribution of contraband, and substandard goods among others.

Other cases handled by the unit included the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) for intelligence-driven operations alongside other augmenting units including cybercrime, ballistics, scenes of crime, principal crime registrar, Crime Intelligence Unit, Homicide, (DNA, Toxicological, Chemistry and Biology Lab Units).
