President William Ruto's government has appointed media personality and former Association of Media Women in Kenya (AMWIK) Executive Director Patience Nyange to the Communications and Multimedia Appeals Tribunal.

In a Kenya Gazette notice dated Monday, March 25 and sent to newsrooms, Nyange was appointed as a member of the tribunal alongside five others by ICT Cabinet Secretary (CS) Eliud Owalo, who appointed Rosemary Wacera Kuria as its chairperson.

The new chair and the six members will serve at the tribunal for three years, effective Friday, March 22.

"In exercise of the powers conferred by section 102 (1) of the Kenya Information and Communications Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communications and the Digital Economy, appoints the following to be members of the Communications and Multimedia Appeals Tribunal, for a period of three (3) years, with effect from the 22nd March, 2024," the gazette notice read in part.

The other members include Vivienne A. Namadoa, Manyura Tiberius Nyangau, Ruth Okowa, Timothy K. Toroney and Dr Samson Wambua Kitonyi.

The Tribunal is established under the Kenya Information and Communication Amendment Act 2013 and deals with disputes arising from activities in the multimedia and telecommunication sector.

The Tribunal adjudicates complaints against journalists and media enterprises as well as listens to appeals against decisions of the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) and communication service providers.

The appointment came merely days after Nyange was appointed by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), an economic alliance of eight nations in eastern Africa, as its Spokesperson.

IGAD, headquartered in Djibouti, brings together countries from the Horn of Africa, the Nile Valley, and the African Great Lakes region.

In the new role, Nyange will report directly to Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, the organization's Executive Secretary. She assumed her duties in March 2024.

"We are thrilled to announce and welcome Nyange Patience to the IGAD family effective March 2024. Patience Nyange joins our team as the Spokesperson, Office of the Executive Secretary, H.E. Dr Workneh Gebeyehu," the organization announced on its social media accounts.

"With her many years of experience, expertise, and passion for effective communication, we are poised to elevate our voice and mission not only in the region but globally. Welcome aboard, we wish you all the best in your journey with us."

Before joining IGAD, Nyange served as the Executive Director of AMWIK. She left the position in January 2024 after more than a year.

Nyange's impressive background includes previous appointments as a Board Member of the Media Council of Kenya (MCK), Assistant Director at the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNHCR), and Communication Advisor at the Ministry of Devolution and Planning.

She boasts of a rich media career, having worked as an Associate Broadcast Mentor with BBC Media Action and a journalist with the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK).

She also held positions as a presenter and producer at Baraka FM.

Viral Tea was yet to get a comment from Nyange on her new government appointment by the time of publishing this article.
