Police in Bungoma County have launched a manhunt for Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa following a shooting incident at a polling station that left a rival's aide dead.

The incident took place at 6 pm at Chebukhwabi Primary School in Kibingei ward and it left a security guard of his closest rival, Brian Khaemba of the Democratic Action Party (DAP-K), dead, according to a police report seen by Viral Tea.

Khaemba had gone to the polling station to witness the counting of votes following the Tuesday, August 9, 2022, general elections and encountered Barasa on his way in.

"It was reported by Mr Brian Khaemba a D.A.P MP aspirant Kimilili constituency that today at around 1800hrs he had gone to Chebukwabi polling station to witness the counting of votes and upon entering the said polling station, he met Hon. Didmus Barasa, the incumbent MP for the Kimilili constituency," read the police report in part.

After about three minutes, Khaemba decided to leave the station and headed to his car with Barasa following him in the company of four men.

He had ordered them not to allow Khaemba to leave the place but his driver, Joshua Nasokho defied the order and switched on the vehicle.

"Hon. Didmus Barasa withdrew a pistol and aimed at Khaemba's aide namely Brian Olunga and shot him on the forehead where profusely bled. He was rushed to Kimilili sub-county hospital where he succumbed while undergoing treatment. Body lying at the hospital," added the police report.

Addressing the press at Kimilili police station shortly after, Bungoma County Commissioner Samuel Kimiti demanded the lawmaker to surrender, appealing to members of the public to alert the police in case they spot him.

"We want him to surrender to police wherever he is. If any member of the public spots him, let them alert the police," he said.

Kimiti was accompanied by Defence Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa who condemned the incident. The CS also asked the police to arrest the MP as they expressed fears that the legislator may have fled to neighbouring Uganda.

The incident comes after Nakuru East MP, David Gikaria was arrested for allegedly fighting an opponent's supporters during the August 9 general elections.

The MP was taken into police custody at the Naka Primary School polling station, while members of the public were lining up to cast their votes.

A video taken before the MP's arrest showed police officers in a heated physical confrontation with the legislator who was reported to have become rowdy after he was denied a replacement ballot for the Governor's seat.

In another incident, former Nairobi governor, Mike Sonko, was whisked away by police officers after being involved in a near-fist fight with outgoing Mombasa Governor Hassan Ali Joho.
