President William Ruto on Wednesday, November 22 revealed that Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha managed to prompt him to prematurely call off his visit to France and return to Kenya.

Speaking during the launch of the Mission for Essential Drugs and Supplies (MEDS) Microbiology Laboratory in Syokimau, Machakos County, Ruto revealed that Nakhumicha called him via phone asking him to attend the event.

Initially, the Head of State tried to convince the Health CS that he needed to continue fulfilling his diplomatic commitments, but Nakhumicha's persuasive and woman-like enticing powers managed to convince him otherwise.

"Yesterday, I got a call from CS Nakhumicha and she was very insistent that this function must go on, now I know why."

"I tried to explain to her that I was away (in France) but I didn't manage (to convince her)," he stated amid the audience's laughter.

On her part, CS Nakhumicha explained that the reason she pushed the President to rush back to the country was that she was a member of the MEDS institution for nine years, hence the launch of the project was a personal affair for her.

“Your Excellency, when I gave you the invite to this place, I knew it was short notice. But there is a critical point that I didn’t tell you, I worked for this institution for close to nine years.

“I was afraid to tell you lest you say that I just come and manage my business. I'm happy you have made it here,” she happily remarked.

According to the CS, the project will play an integral part in the provision of medical supplies across the country.

"Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA) serves 60 per cent of the supply chain and MEDS serves 20 per cent so both are essential in the provision of health services in the country," she pointed out.

President Ruto embarked on a two-day trip to France and Germany, with a focus on bolstering economic ties with the two countries and the EU (European Union), while advocating for strong global consensus on climate action ahead of COP 28.

In Strasbourg, France, the Head of State addressed the EU Parliament, the 705-member-strong legislative and policy organ of the European Union, where he emphasised Kenya's role as the peace and democracy anchor of the region.

On Sunday, November 19, President Ruto expressed his intent to travel to Germany, part of the over 35 trips that he has made to 45 cities worldwide since assuming office in September 2022, a matter which has drawn widespread criticism over allegedly spending exorbitantly on foreign travel amidst a struggling Kenyan economy.

"I have agreed with Bore (Labour CS, Florence) that we will sign bilateral labour agreements to export labour from Kenya. We want to export at least 3,000 Kenyans every week to go work worldwide and change their livelihoods and Kenya," he stated.

"I was in Saudi Arabia last week. My CS was at the Saudi Arabia Embassy as we had agreed. The German (Chancellor) was in Kenya three months ago. I am going to Germany tonight because he (the German President) had promised us 200,000 jobs, so I must go sort it out."
