The Head of State is in Congo to attend the Three Basins climate change conference which brings together countries with the three major forest basins in the world.

The summit aims to implement the first global coalition to restore 350 million hectares of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.

The three-day summit is the first of its kind, bringing together the world's three major tropical forest basins: the Amazon, Congo, and Borneo-Mekong Forest Basins.

The summit should "formalize genuine south-south cooperation in support of biodiversity and the climate," said Collinet Makosso, Prime Minister of the Republic of the Congo.

"His Excellency Sir William Ruto arrived in Brazzaville, this Friday, October 27, 2023. The Kenyan President is coming to take part in the second edition of the Summit of the 3 tropical forest basins of the planet, the presidential segment of which will take place this Saturday, October 28, 2023," read the statement by Official account of the Presidency of the Republic of Congo.

Notably, neither State House nor its Spokesperson, Hussein Mohamed released a statement regarding the trip, as has been the case during previous tours.

This will be President Ruto's 39th trip since he took office on September 13, 2022. This week, the Head of State was in Saudi Arabia for the 7th edition of the Future Investment Initiative (FII) summit.

Earlier on Friday, Ruto ordered the Treasury to reduce the travel budget of all government institutions to the tune of Ksh11 billion. He also denounced media reports that he reduced the budget by Ksh500 million.

"I saw that the media saying I reduced the budget by Ksh500 million. No, it is not Ksh500 million, but I have reduced by Ksh11 billion for those going on those trips," he stated while at a development tour in Voi, Taita Taveta County.

The President argued that some trips are not beneficial to Kenyans, only committing to finance those that will bring more money to Kenyans' pockets.

A report by the Auditor General on the 2022/23 budget revealed that government institutions spent Ksh20.37 billion on domestic and foreign travel.
