Several people were left nursing injuries on Sunday, May 4, hours to the highly anticipated Kenya Premier League match between Shabana FC and Gor Mahia after a stampede erupted from the stands at the Gusii Stadium.

Fans from both teams began streaming into Gusii Stadium as early as 7:00 a.m., fired up to support their sides in the clash for all three points.

The two teams had gone into this game with everything at stake, with just two points separating third-placed K'Ogalo from the home side Shabana, lying fourth in the table.

One major hint that tensions would run high—even before kickoff—was the fact that Gusii Stadium was already packed to capacity hours ahead of the match.

A mix of tension and hype ahead of kickoff nearly threw the event off course, with footage seen by Viral Tea capturing minor scuffles in the stands, likely sparked by rival supporters.

Reports later confirmed that a stampede broke out during the chaos, leaving several fans injured and in need of urgent medical attention.

Some were rushed to a standby ambulance, but with dozens hurt, the situation quickly overwhelmed available resources, forcing others to be taken straight to nearby hospitals.

In the middle of the mayhem, fans spilt onto the pitch trying to escape the violence in the stands, while even stewards had to flee for their safety.

By 1:00 p.m., the tension was at a boiling point, casting serious doubt over whether the much-hyped clash would happen at all, especially with Gor Mahia players still missing from the warm-up. Eventually, the squad made their way onto the field, but the mood remained heavy.

The violence went on for nearly an hour before Kenya Police and GSU units stepped in to break it up and restore calm. Gor Mahia supporters staged a walkout in a show of solidarity for their wounded comrades.

The issue of fracas during high-profile football matches in Kenya is nothing new. On April 21, 2024, chaos by fan bases of Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards marred the aftermath of the Mashemeji Derby at the Nyayo Stadium, forcing police to intervene by lobbing teargas.

On March 25, 2025, ahead of the Mashemeji Derby, CAF Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) LOC chairman, Nicholas Musonye warned that if any match led to acts of vandalism, such as damaged seats or stone-throwing, both teams would be banned from playing at Nyayo Stadium in the future.
