Sports Kenya on Tuesday, July 18 took the first steps towards preparing Kenya to co-host the 2027 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) by inviting tenders for the rehabilitation of stadiums to meet CAF/FIFA standards.

The three stadiums set to undergo rehabilitation are Nyayo National Stadium, Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani, and Kipchoge Keino Stadium.

As part of the tender requirements, Sports Kenya plans to install synthetic tracks around the stadiums to ensure compliance with international standards.

The description of service for one of the open tenders, published in a local newspaper, states, "The proposed laying of synthetic tracks at Moi International Sports Center, Kasarani Annex, Nyayo National Stadium, and Kipchoge Keino Stadium."

These renovations will position the stadiums to successfully host the 2027 AFCON, following the collaborative Pamoja Bid in which Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda teamed up to secure the hosting rights.

Kenya currently lags behind its neighbours, Tanzania and Uganda, both of which already possess accredited stadiums or have commenced upgrades to meet the necessary requirements.

To participate in the CAF preliminary round fixtures scheduled for August and September, the FKF Premier League champions had to seek an alternative ground in Tanzania due to the absence of a FIFA/CAF-accredited stadium in Kenya.

Gor Mahia has selected the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium and Azam FC's Chamazi Complex as potential venues, with the club's Secretary General, Sam Ochola, stating, "We intend to use the Azam Stadium for our preliminary matches and then proceed to the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium if we happen to advance to the group stages."

How To Apply

Eligible bidders are advised to obtain tender documents from the Supply Chain Management Office in Kasarani or download them from Sports Kenya www.sportskenya.org or Treasury websites supplier.treasury.go.ke

The rehabilitation of the stadiums is an essential endeavour that will enhance Kenya's sporting infrastructure and further solidify its position as a capable co-host for the 2027 AFCON.
