David Ndii, Chairperson of President William Ruto's Council of Economic Advisors (CEA), has responded to critics who created a social media storm over his weight after a photo trended for the better part of Thursday, February 22.

The photo that emerged from a three-day executive retreat in Naivasha, Nakuru County, featuring Ndii alongside President Ruto and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, saw the advisor's physique being the subject of public scrutiny.

To be specific, Ndii was captured with a protruding belly, leading to netizens flooding social media with speed, and posting comments about his weight.

However, the economist hit back at his haters, terming them as 'imbeciles' who were wasting time talking about issues that were of no importance to the general public.

Further, he voiced concerns about how such a topic would trend on social media, questioning the tweeps' Intelligence Quotient (IQ) levels.

"To be overweight is a remediable personal challenge of little or no consequence to the general public. To be empty-headed is an incurable societal burden.

"Ũrimũ ndũrĩ ndawa (stupidity has no cure). To have so many imbeciles with nothing better to talk about on a public platform is a national tragedy," he wrote on X.

The response from Ndii garnered support from other eminent people like Dr Ahmed Kalebi who supported him saying weight is something that can be addressed.

Kalebi argued that no one should be ashamed of their body and body negativity should have no place in one's mind.

"Being overweight is an elastic challenge which has many possible contributory factors that can be addressed or managed.

"There should be no shame in being alive to one’s weight challenges. No one should allow negativity from others on account of weight," said Kalebi.

Former Isiolo Deputy Governor Abdi Issa added that the public should draw a boundary between public and private matters.

"It's crucial to distinguish between private and public matters. David's personal space should be respected, and his performance should not be judged based on his appearance. Let's focus on merit and professionalism," he noted.

"Leave David Ndii alone. It is the lamb chops at State House and a good appetite. My tummy was bigger when I was a resident there! And we had a bar," political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi weighed in.

The executive retreat, attended by top government officials including Cabinet Secretaries and Principal Secretaries, aimed to assess the performance of the Kenya Kwanza administration and highlight key achievements since its inception.

Notably, the retreat featured politicians in their casual attire, a distinct departure from their formal dress.
