CCTV footage recorded from a shop in Migori Town surfaced on Saturday, April 8 showing the final moments before a lorry transporting rice lost control and plunged into a boda boda parking spot in the town.

According to the video, it was all regular activities for the first five seconds before the ill-fated lorry sped out of nowhere, interfering with normalcy.

The lorry could be seen speeding past another lorry and a matatu before heading straight for the riders, avoiding colliding into the lorry from behind.

Here is the video:

Even though the boda boda rider and a pedestrian were seemingly the first to be impacted by the crash, a vehicle blocked the view of the CCTV from capturing the grisly accident unfolding in a thick cloud of dust.

The grisly incident sent locals scampering for safety before moving with speed to rescue the victims, while others seized the opportunity to loot rice from the lorry.

Several reports had earlier indicated that the driver lost control of the lorry along the road and according to eyewitnesses, started hooting at the Chamkombe area indicating a brake failure before knocking several people in the busy town, leaving three in critical condition and more than eight people dead.

Eyewitnesses recounted that the lorry had plunged down a sloppy stretch of the road after the driver lost control, ramming into passers-by, motorists and boda boda riders before stopping after crashing into a lorry ferrying sand.

"We saw the lorry speeding into town, and it crashed passers-by, motorists, and boda boda riders as it went down the hill.

"It then rammed into a lorry with sand, forcing it to stop. If the lorry without sand weren't in that spot, then the lorry with rice (which lost control) would have killed more," an eyewitness recounted.

Another eyewitness recounted that the section of the road was unclear, as some drivers had parked and left their vehicles, hampering movement. Moreover, another resident revealed that boda boda riders had also invaded sections of the road, turning them into parking bays, and traders had occupied road sections, affecting normal traffic flow.

Residents called on Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen to deploy police officers to control traffic on that section of the road as well as the Migori County government to allocate proper parking bays for cars and boda-boda riders.

"We just plead with the government to remove vehicles which are parking here and blocking the road," the witness stated.

Migori County Police Commander Mark Wanjala confirmed the incident saying investigations have already begun to establish the cause of the accident.

"The residents rushed to the crime scene and started looting rice from the lorry instead of helping to rescue the injured. However, our officers managed to rescue the injured," Wanjala disclosed.

Migori Governor George Mbogo confirmed the incident noting that several casualties had been reported while others were seriously injured, adding that the rescue team was in the area transferring the victims to the hospital for medical assistance.

"A report will enable us to take an initiative that can avoid such from recurring. I will give further information as it becomes available," he stated on his call to the police to immediately investigate the crash and report its real cause.

Azimio la Umoja leader, Raila Odinga, offered his condolence message to the victims' families after the accident.
