Kenya Air Force commandant Colonel Flavian Mwangi Waweru was found dead outside the airbase's premises in Eastleigh, Nairobi on Monday evening, September 26.

The police and the military confirmed the demise, saying that Waweru's body was discovered inside his car along Juja Road, which is a few metres from the entrance of the base.

Police disclosed that Waweru's body was found locked inside his car parked a few metres from the base by curious onlookers who had spotted the car in one position for a long time.

“He was found locked in his car along Juja Road, a few meters from the main entrance of the Airbase. Immediately the military police were informed and they rushed him to hospital where they were informed he had died,” an officer at the Moi Airbase Police post revealed to The Standard.

The officer who sought anonymity due to protocol issues said Col. Waweru was alone in the car when the incident occurred around Monday at 3 pm.

Waweru was coming from Nairobi CBD before his demise. Investigations have been launched, with a preliminary report expected to be issued in due course.

The body was transported to a nearby morgue pending autopsy. 

Waweru was serving as Kenya Air Force Training Wing Colonel and had overseen the Kenya Air Force New Soldiers Sports Talent Search Championship 2022 at Moi Air base a few days ago.

"Commandant Kenya Air Force (KAF) Training Wing Colonel Flavian Waweru presided over the closing ceremony of the Kenya Air Force New Soldiers Sports Talent Search Championship 2022 held from 22nd to 23rd September 2022 at the Sina Makosa Stadium, Moi Air Base in Nairobi.

"The two-day event saw new soldiers compete in various sporting activities ranging from football, netball, volleyball and cross country. The Service Members were grouped into their respective Formations/Units and competed against each other," a statement by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) read in part.

In the 6KM Cross Country championships, Laikipia Air Base were the victors with Moi Air Base coming in a close second. The netball competition had Moi Air Base as the winners of the hotly contested trophy with Wajir Air Base (WAB) coming in second.

The volleyball final had Laikipia Air Base face off with their counterparts from Wajir Air Base in an entertaining duel that saw WAB scoop the win with two straight sets.

The tournament concluded with a football match between WAB and KTW where WAB beat their formidable opponent 3-0 marking the end of the Championship. Wajir Air Base was awarded the best team overall with Laikipia Air Base as the runner up with Moi Air Base awarded the most organized team.

Addressing the various teams, on behalf of Base Commander Moi Air Base, Col Waweru congratulated all the participants for making the championship captivating. He also encouraged the troops to continue working towards continually improving their fitness levels and talents.

The aim of the Championship was to identify talent among the new Service Members ahead of the Chief of Defence Forces Bora Cup challenge.
