Citizen TV anchor, Jeff Koinange announced on Tuesday, December 13 that he will be off TV screens for an unspecified number of weeks.

He took to his Twitter page to reveal that he was going on a break but did not state the purpose of being away from the silver screen.

He went on to appreciate his followers for their support throughout 2022 and wished them good tidings ahead of the festive season and God's blessings.

"Folks, I'm gonna be off these streets for a couple of weeks and didn't want to do so without wishing each & every one of you and your families Happy Holidays and all the VERY BEST as we end one year and begin another!

"God Bless you all and thanks as always for your Love and Support!" he wrote.

His statement comes amidst a crisis in the Kenyan media industry that has seen media houses reorganise their businesses to stay afloat. This however meant that they would fire an unknown number of staff in huge numbers.

Already, the likes of Standard Group, Nation Media Group, Radio Africa and Capital FM have threatened to send many of their employees home.

According to RAG Group CEO Patrick Quarcoo, the move was informed by a shift in the media environment that has forced it to make changes to its business model to keep it in competition with other media houses in the country.

"As management, we have been faced with a situation that requires a critical business decision to be made to ensure business continuity. We will therefore be reorganizing our internal business operations and in the process, we may declare numerous positions redundant based on the new structure," Quarcoo explained.

NMG, SMG and British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) also announced their intentions to fire staff, with the bug feared that it will affect many more media houses in the coming weeks.

Despite Capital FM stopping its planned salary cuts to employees from December 2022, the radio station, under Capital Group, hinted at joining the rest of the media houses in a mass firing exercise.

"The reality is that even after engaging in consultation with employees, only 7 members of staff out of 112 have consented to the proposed salary reductions. We are therefore unable to gain traction with this proposal put forward and in compliance with the Employment Act, we are left with no option but to defer the proposal and radically rethink the future of our business," Capital Group Director Mary-Ann Musangi stated.

The options moving forward, she said, will involve a restructuring of the business but the group would inform its employees regarding the next steps once it has defined the way forward.

The mass layoffs by media houses have already seen established names such as Mark Masai and Dennis Okari leave NTV.
