11 students from the troubled Sacred Heart Mukumu Girls High School in Kakamega County have been admitted to the hospital after falling ill on Friday, May 12.

A report by Nation.Africa on Saturday, May 13 revealed that the students were admitted to the St Elizabeth Mukumu Mission Hospital after facing different ailments.

Two of them are being treated for malaria while nine others were rushed to the hospital after complaining of abdominal pain and fatigue, with doctors closely monitoring their condition.

Sister Jane Mmbone, the principal of the school, confirmed the incident but indicated that there was no cause for alarm as the students were responding well to treatment.

"In fact, three of the students have been discharged after their condition improved and are back in school," Mmbone stated.

She added that the other pupils reported back to school before they had fully recovered and were being treated and their condition closely monitored.

A nurse has been posted at the school to deal with any emergencies involving students who fall ill before they are referred to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Mukumu Girls opened on Monday, May 8 following a five-week closure over the death of three students and a teacher. Mmbone however noted that the opening was done in phases, with only Form Four students reporting on Monday.

The students were also required to produce a medical report on their health status; upon which will be assessed by health doctors stationed at the school.

Mmbone also pointed out that prayer sessions were introduced every evening as members of the clergy would be based in the institution.

"On Tuesday, we will receive Form Threes and on Wednesday, the school will have a day of prayer for the two classes. On Thursday and Friday, Form Two and Form One students will report to the school respectively.

"On Saturday, it will be a day reserved for prayer. Afterwards, there will be clergy who will be conducting prayers every evening," she noted.

The institution would only receive water from Kericho Water and Sanitation Company Limited as other sources were cancelled, with the principal reiterating that all the food was incinerated in Bamburi, Mombasa County.

Furthermore, all students would also undergo psycho-social counselling upon reporting.

"We have groups from Kenya red cross, psychosocial counselling, and medics. As the students were at home, we requested the parents to take their children to the hospital. So they're reporting back with a medical report which will also be assessed by medics on the ground.

"We followed the procurement procedure and brought in new suppliers and expect today to receive the maize and beans. We have the public health officers to ascertain whether the food is safe. The affected stores were treated and cleaned," she indicated.

Mukumu Girls students had previously cited poor hygiene and administration negligence as causes of the crisis, with them recounting during a funeral service of one of their own how they raised concerns about the poor state of the school's water, store, and kitchen facilities but their complaints fell on deaf ears.

According to the students, despite continuous efforts, the administration chose to ignore their pleas, stating that the students were not in school for comfort and could leave if they were not satisfied with the situation.

The students had no choice but to keep quiet, even as stomach upsets became a frequent occurrence. The administration only offered painkillers to those affected, and students who complained of stomach aches were subjected to pregnancy tests.

The administration only took action after the situation worsened, resulting in the tragic loss of lives, with the students asserting that if the administration had acted upon their complaints, the outbreak could have been avoided.

Education CS Ezekiel Machogu had deployed Mmbone to serve as the Mukumu Girls principal after he transferred the school's principal and dissolve its Board of Management.

The Ministry of Health on Friday, April 14 confirmed the reported outbreak of the possible infectious disease in Mukumu Girls triggered by the consumption of contaminated water.
