At least 12 people were on Thursday, September 7 killed following a road accident involving a passenger shuttle and a lorry at the Ndii area in Voi, Taita Taveta County on the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway.

Images seen by Viral Tea showed the wreckage of the shuttle owned by Genesis, a Public Service Transport company as well as the trailer which collided with the matatu,

Confirming the accident which occurred at around 4.20 pm, Voi OCPD Bernstein Shari revealed that 12 passengers died on the spot after the matatu they were travelling in collided head-on with the truck.

"The driver of the lorry and two passengers sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Moi County Referral Hospital," Shari told the media.

The 14-seater matatu was heading towards Mombasa from Nairobi while the cargo truck was heading in the opposite direction, transporting goods from Mombasa to Juba in South Sudan.

"Responding to a grisly road accident in Ndii, Voi County, involving a head-on collision between a Matatu and a lorry," read part of a statement issued by Emergency Medical Services. 

"We are working alongside the Kenya Police and well-wishers, we are swiftly evacuating the critically injured to the hospital."

The bodies of the victims were taken to the Moi County Referral Hospital morgue as investigations into the accident continued.

The accident served as a reminder of the dangerous state of Kenyan roads triggering accidents that can be avoided.

The Mombasa-Nairobi Highway has been in the spotlight numerous times over grisly road accidents in the recent past, with one of the deadliest occurring on July 8, 2022, which claimed the lives of 20 people.

NTSA Accident Statistics

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) revealed that during the period between January to June 24, 2023, Kenya witnessed a total of 2,124 road fatalities.

Out of these fatalities, 729 individuals were pedestrians, while 561 were motorcyclists. 

Additionally, the data indicated that 403 passengers lost their lives, alongside 196 pillion passengers and 189 drivers, all as a result of road accidents.

The remaining casualties were pedal cyclists.
