38 Suspects Arrested As DCI Seize Motorcycles Used In Robbing Nairobi Residents During Ruto's Tour
The arrests come in the wake of escalating crime along key city roads, particularly during President William Ruto’s recent visits.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Saturday, March 15, announced the arrest of 38 suspects linked to a string of highway robberies targeting pedestrians and motorists in Nairobi.
The arrests come in the wake of escalating crime along key city roads, particularly during President William Ruto’s recent visits.
According to authorities, the suspects—now detained in various police stations—are accused of terrorizing commuters along Thika Road, Waiyaki Way, and Jogoo Road. These areas have witnessed a surge in criminal activity, with gangs using motorcycles to ambush victims, snatch valuables, and flee the scene.
During the crackdown, police recovered seven motorcycles suspected to have been used in the robberies, along with several stolen mobile phones. These items have been secured as evidence and will be presented in court.

Surge in Crime Following Presidential Visit
On March 11, Nairobi descended into chaos following President Ruto’s rally in Mathare, with groups of youth engaging in looting and vandalism along Thika Road, Juja Road, and Outering Road. Businesses and motorists bore the brunt of the unrest, sparking panic and disruptions across the city.
Viral images and videos captured scenes of attackers targeting passengers inside public transport vehicles and private cars. The violence erupted shortly after the president’s address, with youth barricading sections of Thika Road near the National Youth Service (NYS) headquarters and the Kariobangi Roundabout.
The mob shattered car windows and forcibly took valuables from commuters, prompting police to fire warning shots in an attempt to restore order. The situation escalated further, forcing President Ruto to cancel a planned rally at Roysambu and return to State House.
Similar Attacks Reported in Eastlands
A similar wave of attacks was reported on Friday, March 14, following Ruto’s tour of Eastlands. Commuters along Jogoo Road fell victim to muggings, with assailants snatching bags and other belongings in broad daylight.
The arrested suspects are expected to be arraigned in court on Monday, March 17, facing charges including robbery with violence, preparation to commit a felony, and obstruction. The DCI has urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.
Increased Security Measures
Amid growing concerns over the boldness of criminals, the DCI has intensified patrols in affected areas and ramped up intelligence-gathering efforts. Authorities are also calling on residents to provide any information that could lead to further arrests.
The recent crime wave has left many Nairobi residents on edge, with victims recounting harrowing experiences of being ambushed by armed criminals, often in broad daylight. As the crackdown continues, the public remains hopeful that law enforcement efforts will restore security to the capital’s streets.
