A multi-agency team led by the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) on Thursday, April 3, raided a large-scale chang’aa brewing den in Mwaguto Village, Kisii South Sub-County.

Targeting illicit alcohol this time round, NACADA in a statement revealed that the multi-agency team seized a staggering 55,000 litres of kangara and 500 litres of chang’aa.

The early morning operation resulted in the arrest of five suspects, three women and two men, as authorities dismantled what was described as a sophisticated illegal distillery.

The brewing operation, spanning four acres, was equipped with storage facilities and advanced brewing equipment, signaling a well-organized network.

NACADA CEO Dr. Anthony Omerikwa lauded the raid as a landmark victory in the fight against illegal alcohol, issuing a stern warning to those involved in the trade. “This is a clear message to all those engaging in this illegal business—we are coming for you,” he declared.

He further revealed that NACADA will pursue legal action to have the four-acre property forfeited to the government, stating, “This property is a crime scene, and we will ensure it is reverted to the state as part of our efforts to dismantle these networks completely."

Local residents welcomed the raid, hailing it as a long-overdue action against a brewing den they blamed for rising crime, broken families, and community destruction.

Area Chief Samuel Nyabuto called for continued vigilance, urging authorities to sustain the crackdown to ensure the illicit trade does not resurface.

The suspects are set to be arraigned in court, facing charges related to illegal alcohol production and distribution.

This comes hours after NACADA led a high-profile multi-agency operation which uncovered a massive consignment of suspected cannabis sativa in Kisii County.

The Wednesday afternoon, April 2 raid in Mwamogeza Village, Kiamuasi Location, Daraja Mbili sub-location, led to the seizure of seven 50kg sacks, four 90kg sacks, and two large carrier bags of the illicit substance, all cleverly hidden in rental houses.

Authorities are now on the hunt for the prime suspect, Geoffrey Nyabira, alias Jeff, a notorious drug kingpin who narrowly escaped arrest. Nyabira, well-known in the region for his deep ties to the drug trade, remains a top target for law enforcement.
