"One person in critical condition is being rushed to hospital by our ambulance crew after a five-storey building collapsed near PCEA Church in Kasarani.

"Rescue efforts alongside other disaster response teams are underway," stated the ambulance.

Two women who were helping with the building's construction told the media that they noticed cracks on the ground floor walls in the morning hours.

"We're shocked at what has just occurred. It is unfortunate that the building collapsed."

A construction worker added that City Hall officers arrived at the site for inspection and were said to have ordered workers out of the construction site immediately.

However, the building's supervisor reportedly asked the workers to ignore the warning and proceed with construction.

"When we arrived in the morning, we were cautioned of the cracks but our contractor dismissed the claims and urged us to continue working. I don't know what happened as City Hall officers flagged off the building and warned people to keep off.

"They then escorted six people to their offices and as they were coming back, the building began to topple and collapse. After the building collapsed, he managed to escape and fled. At the moment, we don't know where the contractor is," the worker stated.

Those injured have been taken to St Francis Hospital in Kasarani.

On Monday, November 7, an eight-storey building collapsed in Tassia, Embakasi, with the blame attributed to its poor foundation.

"When a building like this collapses, the first thing that comes to mind is it was not strong enough. The foundation and the entire support system should be questioned,"  the  Institution of Engineers in Kenya (IEK) vice chairperson, Grace Muthoni, stated on Tuesday, November 8.

Notably, no casualties were reported but scores were feared to have been trapped inside the debris.
