Eugene Wamalwa, the Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-Kenya) leader, revealed on Monday, June 5 that the Nation Media Group (NMG) was right to publish its expose on popular Mama Mboga Pauline Waithera was "used and dumped" by the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party.

During a press conference held at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation in Nairobi, Wamalwa argued that the expose had offered the Azimio la Umoja coalition a clear picture of their claims that President William Ruto's regime was reneging on its promises to the common mwananchi which helped propel them to the government.

Wamalwa appreciated the Daily Nation for laying bare the alleged lies by the Kenya Kwanza government whereby it relied on the mama mbogas to defeat Azimio in the August 9, 2022, general elections and abandon them while in power.

"Today they are no longer singing about the hustler who pretended to be one of them and has now abandoned that mama mboga who was on the headlines today.

"We want to thank you the media for calling out William Ruto and his lies and for exposing the big lie that was using the mama mbogas, the boda bodas and the hustlers to get to power and then forgetting about them," he noted.

The former Defence Cabinet Secretary further claimed that Kenya Kwanza was resorting to using dictatorship tactics to curtail what he claimed was a rebellion building up in the Mt Kenya region.

He added that Ruto's coalition was losing support from the majority of the mountain residents and threatening to take the country back to the Nyayo days.

"We also know that out there in the mountain, because there are where they have lost support, they are preparing to use very strong-arm tactics and we are talking about a repressive regime that intends to mute the rebellion that is building in the mountain. They say you give a dog a bad name and you hang it.

"As they are losing the support of the majority of the young people, the boda bodas and the mama mbogas, the threat in the mountain is going to be like the days of Nyayo, the days of Mwakenya. All they needed to do is brand you a Mwakenya and plant something on you, and you'll be arrested," he added.

He further noted that Kenya Kwanza was trying to use the term 'Mungiki' as a weapon against any youth revolting against the regime as well as an informal worker pained by the high cost of living.

"In the mountain, before open dissent is seen, they intend to use the word 'Mungiki'; brand any young person who might be rebelling against this regime including the boda boda who are feeling the weight of the high cost of petrol," he went on.

The presser saw the majority of the Mt Kenya leaders accuse the government of profiling the Mt Kenya youth and terming them as Mungiki, an outlawed criminal sect, days after Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki warned of Mungiki resurgence, prompting the arrest of former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga.

In the Daily Nation headline feature, Waithera alleged that Kenya Kwanza-allied leaders were using her popularity to gain political mileage, adding that  despite being used to popularise the UDA outfit during the campaign period leading up to the 2022 general elections on August 9, she is still living in poverty.

“I am very angry with politicians who used me for political gains during campaigns and have now abandoned me.

"I was used to illustrate how poor people will benefit from the Ruto government through bottom-up but even after they won the presidential election, I was not even invited to Kasarani Stadium during the inauguration of President Ruto and his deputy. I spent the whole day crying at home, people were laughing at me," she complained to the newspaper.

Interior Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) Dennis Itumbi, however dismissed her claims, noting that Waithera was given considerable support for her business, including Ksh300,000 to stock her shop.

He further noted that the President committed to rewarding the millions of Kenyans who voted for him and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua through the Hustler Fund loan kitty, among other programmes the Head of State would roll out in adherence to his campaign promises.
