Rachel Chebukati, the daughter of the late former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman Wafula Chebukati, has revealed that there was an attempt to end his father's life during the 2022 general elections.

Speaking during his burial service at Chebukati's home in Sabatia-Kiminini Constituency on Saturday, March 8, Rachel revealed that Chebukati had received intelligence of someone ordered to kill him so that he could not announce the election results.

Despite the threats, she revealed that her father had no intention of backing down when it came to announcing the results of the presidential election.

"On the day, just a moment before he went to Bomas to announce the results, at that time he had already received intelligence that somebody wanted to end his life to stop him from announcing the results," she stated.

"We sat together, and the pastor prayed, and I hugged my father, and he looked at me, and I looked at him, and I said to him that he doesn't need to explain anything because I knew he would stand with the truth and for Kenyans."

Rachel recalled seeing Chebukati shed a tear—something she had never witnessed before—realizing it might have been his last meeting with his family.

She handed her father the speech she had written for him to deliver after announcing the results and reassured him that the family would stand by his side no matter what.

"We looked at each other without really saying much but knowing that that might have been the last time we could have seen each other. I have never seen my dad cry, but that day my dad shed a tear," she said.

Following the turmoil at Bomas after the results were announced, Rachel disclosed that Chebukati returned home with injuries and was bleeding.

"The speech he gave at Bomas was so impactful that even after he came home he said that he did not remember what he said; he took off his shoes, and he was bleeding, but he even didn't realize he was bleeding; this was just my dad, to get the work done, and he was proud for what he had done in Bomas," she stated.

On his part, Chebukati's son, Emmanuel Chebukati, narrated the last moments he spent with his father before his unfortunate demise, describing him as a brave and jovial man.

Emmanuel had just returned to the country from a conference in Spain, bringing back an authentic Spanish hat worn during bullfighting events, which he placed on his father's head.

"I gave him the hat, and I put it on top of his head, and he immediately said to me, 'I feel like a bullfighter already,' and then he went on to say, 'Nobody can mess with me when I am in my bullfighting hat,'" Emmanuel narrated.

Emmanuel noted that while the world saw Chebukati as a fearless and firm leader, especially with the bold bullfighting hat, he was a completely different person in his role as a father, husband, and brother.

"But through my eyes and the eyes of the family members seated here, you will see him as simply the best father, husband, and brother you'll ever have. It is said that if you think Chebukati is tough and doesn't smile, then you don't know Chebukati," he revealed.

Wafula Chebukati was appointed as the IEBC Chairman by former President Uhuru Kenyatta in January 2017 and was responsible for overseeing the 2017 and 2022 general elections. He passed away on February 20 after battling brain cancer.

While eulogizing their father, Emmanuel, Jonathan, and Rachel praised him as an exceptional parent who guided them through their upbringing. They vowed to carry forward the values and lessons he imparted to them for future generations.
