Dramatic scenes ensued at a liquor store along Lumumba Drive near TRM Mall in Kasarani as detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption (EACC) took three minutes to restrain a police officer who was caught soliciting bribes from traders.

The EACC officers stormed the shop acting on a tip-off from members of the public who complained that the officer attached to Kasarani Police Station was frustrating their operations by taking bribes.

In a nearly four-minute video shared online, the officer could be seen tightly gripping the rails of the liquor store while screaming to the top of his voice in a bid to distort the concentration of the officers trying to restrain him.

To worsen matters, the officer went on to handcuff himself to the rails, which forced the EACC officer to approach him from behind to remove the cuffs.

Here is the video:

As he kept screaming like a child, some officers lifted him from the ground and others held him by the scuff as they tried to arrest him.

The officer could be heard screaming ‘Kill me! Kill me!' while claiming that not only were his rights violated but he was also assaulted in the scuffle.

Meanwhile, a lady officer could be seen trying to conceal a pistol in front of her tummy, presumably in case the scuffle escalated into a full-blown confrontation.

The EACC officers nonetheless overpowered the cop and forced him out of a liquor store into a waiting van which sped off to an unknown destination.

EACC has been intensifying its crackdown on police officers accused of corruption, from traffic police officers to those in offices and others at business premises.

The country has been treated to dramatic arrests, one of them occurring on November 30, 2023, whereby a traffic police officer opened fire on EACC detectives during an operation conducted at the Naivasha-Mai Mahiu Road which saw the arrest of three officers.

During the scuffle and shooting, the two fugitive police officers took away some of the money that had been recovered by EACC detectives amounting to about Ksh15,000 collected in one hour.

In response, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Mirriam Muli announced that traffic police officers were banned from carrying firearms while on duty.

"It has been noted with great concern that officers actively engaged in traffic duties are armed. This has resulted in the misuse of firearms by the officers. From today 30th November 2023, no officer actively on traffic duties will carry a firearm," read a communiqué addressed to all regional police bosses across the country.

EACC chairperson Bishop David Oginde also indicated that they not only target police but also state officials accused of embezzling funds, with notable crackdowns made on civil servants accused of landing state jobs by using fake or forged academic certificates.

“When the long arm of the law finally catches up with you, we shall recover all the money you got through that process,” Oginde warned on Monday, January 22, after meeting with Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong'o.
