Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kithure Kindiki has ordered a crackdown targeting Kenyans notorious for using social media to incite members of the public to hate and violence within the Lamu region.

The CS spoke on Thursday, December 7 as he reviewed and held consultations as well as assessed the security situation at Salama and Poromoko, Lamu West Constituency, Lamu County.

"Continuous engagement with communities to build their confidence in security agencies remains a priority.

"A crackdown has been ordered for investigations, arrest and prosecution of all those using social media and other media or otherwise inciting the public to hate and violence along religious, ethnic, political or other sectarian parameters," he stated in part.

Kindiki appeared to respond to a widely circulated video claiming that there was a plot to evict some communities from Lamu.

Meanwhile, he noted that the government remains seized of the security situation in Lamu County to neutralize the threats posed by terrorists, extremist ideologues and other criminals.

"It is gratifying to note the significant progress made by the Multi-Agency Operation Linda Boni and the commendable and patriotic sacrifices of our officers.

"Upon review of the prevailing operational environment, additional security facilities have been set up to enhance security in Marafa, Widho, Juhudi, Salama and adjacent areas," he added.

In light of the ongoing El Nino rains, Kindiki also revealed that several security facilities will be rehabilitated and others repositioned to ensure maximum vantage against criminal elements.

On October 18, 2023, Kindiki published the names and photos of 35 wanted suspects in connection with terror attacks in Lamu and Boni Forest, with him and security agencies, including the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) revealing that the suspects were wanted for questioning over terror-related activities in Lamu County.

The suspects were directed to surrender to the nearest police station. Kenyans with information about the 35 were also urged to reach out to the police with a yet-to-be-disclosed monetary reward being offered for information that would lead to their arrest.

Kindiki stated that the 35 were responsible for the placement of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) on various earth roads in the area, some of which claimed the lives of several Kenyans along the Coastal belt.

The suspects were also linked to the killing of civilians along the Lamu-Witu-Garsen Highway as well as the cold-blooded murders of civilians at Lango la Simba, Witu, Mpeketoni, Juhudi, Salama, Hindi, and other areas.
