Details have now emerged regarding the torture of social media influencer Billy Mwangi, following his release after he was abducted.

Speaking to the media, Manyatta Member of Parliament (MP) Gitonga Mukunji uncovered details of what Mwangi went through at the hands of his abductors, having spearheaded the demand for Billy's release.

While joining Billy's family on Monday, January 6 shortly after the reunion, Mukunji revealed that preliminary reports suggested that the young man was whipped during his detention and held in a room where he could not make out where exactly he was, an ordeal that left him traumatised.

"The preliminary report is that Billy Mwangi is seriously traumatised. He was whipped and kept in a dark room. He was somewhere he could not know where he was," recounted Mukunji.

"When we were enjoying the Christmas holidays the young man was locked in an unknown place. I am told Billy Mwangi was being given one meal a day and it was portioned to make him feel helpless."

While condemning the abduction that has since gone unchecked, the MP vowed to take legislative action and amend laws that will safeguard the safety of Kenyans.

"Let Billy be the last person to go through the ordeal that he has gone through. We are even going to look at how we can change our laws to ensure that if such a thing happens, the government first stops because one of us is all of us," he vowed.

“Let me reiterate that the law is very clear on how individuals who break the law are to be treated, and because Billy has not been charged means that these people wanted to instill fear in us and keep us in the cold but we are even stronger."

The MP reiterated that Kenyans would not allow lawlessness, the overreach of government and instances where there is ignorance of the rule of law, adding "We have come out stronger as leaders who have [a] conscience and we are going to fight more."

Meanwhile, Billy Mwangi’s father, Gerald Karicha, in a media interview, narrated the events surrounding his return on Monday. The return of Billy comes as a relief to his parents, who had made headlines in their plea to see their son.

“He came at around 8 am. He brought himself home. I was with his mum outside when we saw him. We thank God, all the people who have prayed with us and supported us,” Karicha revealed on Monday afternoon.

On December 31, 2024, Karicha appeared in court after a habeas corpus order was issued requiring security bodies to produce the six abductees in court. He broke down in court as he explained how his son was whisked away as he awaited to be shaved and bundled into a waiting car by the men who arrived in a station wagon and a double-cabin pick-up truck.

Billy was abducted on December 21, 2024, and returned to his home after 16 days to his home in Embu. He had disappeared after posting AI-generating images of President William Ruto.

He alongside three other abductees; Peter Muteti, Bernard Kavuli, and Ronny Kiplangat were released ahead of the #EndAbductionsKE protests. Two more, including X cartoonist, Kibet Bull, and Steve Mbisi are yet to be recovered.
