President Uhuru Kenyatta made his first public appearance in Mombasa County on Wednesday, August 31 since his deputy, William Ruto, was declared the president-elect.

Uhuru was spotted at Mombasa Old Town's Barka restaurant, according to videos seen by Viral Tea, having had lunch with governor-elect Abdulswamad Nassir.

Alongside the duo was outgoing governor Hassan Ali Joho, Kilifi County Governor Gideon Mung'aro, Nairobi Woman Representative-elect Esther Passaris, former Murang'a Woman Rep Sabina Chege and other political figures.

The president was seemingly in a happy mood as he walked through a crowd of people swarming him in the streets of Mombasa County.

He freely interacted with members of the public and shook their hands, as well as took photos with them, breaking the usual presidential security protocol.

At some point he turned down a request for an interview with a journalist but promised him "You want a message, do not worry, we will look for you."

His appearance came just a day after Nassir won the Mombasa gubernatorial elections conducted on Monday, August 29. Explaining the purpose of the visit, Chege noted that Uhuru was joining them to celebrate.

"We are excited that he is here with us- we are very happy. He is also celebrating with us the win from Mombasa," the outgoing Woman Rep. remarked.

Uhuru's last public appearance came when he met religious leaders and hosted United States (US) Senator Chris Coons at State House, Nairobi on Thursday, August 18. The senator commended President Kenyatta for ensuring peace and stability prevailed during the election period.

“We are encouraged by the peace Kenya has continued to experience during this period,” said Senator Coons.

On his part, President Kenyatta said Kenya will remain steadfast in entrenching the principles of good governance to ensure the country upholds its position as a shining example of democracy in the continent by maintaining peace during this transition period.

“My greatest desire is that peace will prevail and we may set an example in the continent and the world,” President Kenyatta said.

Also present during the talks were Cabinet Secretaries Raychelle Omamo (Foreign Affairs) Betty Maina (Trade) and Whitman among others.
