Former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary (CS) Peter Munya on Monday, July 10 announced his political comeback after an eight-month break to spearhead three Azimio la Umoja rallies.

In a statement, Munya revealed that the rallies will take place on Wednesday, July 12 in Meru County, though spread out according to different timelines of the day.

Furthermore, he noted that the rallies will touch on the generally high cost of living across the country as well as insecurity in the Meru region.

“I will Preside over three Azimio Rallies on Wednesday 12th July 2023 In Meru County. 1. Meru town-Morning 2. Muthara market-Afternoon. 3. Maua Town-Afternoon.

"Agenda: 1. Unbearable high cost of Living. 2. Insecurity in the region. Come one Come all,” Munya stated.

Munya revealed in an interview in October 2022 that he retired to farming following the Kenya Kwanza coalition's ascension to power with the swearing-in of President William Ruto on September 13, 2022.

"I am now a full-time farmer. I am doing coffee and dairy. I also recently started doing tea farming. Here there is no pressure," Munya revealed at the time.

The former CS had attended Ruto's first Cabinet meeting chaired at State House on September 27, 2022 alongside his former Cabinet colleagues, despite previously missing an event where Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua flagged subsidised fertilisers.

He had been crisscrossing the Mt Kenya region rallying voters in the vote-rich region to support Raila in order to defeat Ruto in the 2022 general elections. Ruto, however, after assuming power, reiterated that he will work with all leaders to revive the economy and lower the cost of living.

He also maintained that Raila and former President Uhuru Kenyatta were his competitors rather than enemies as many Kenyans were made to believe.

Meanwhile, Azimio leader Raila Odinga announced that the nationwide anti-government protests will continue on Wednesday, July 12.

"We are, therefore, collecting 10 million signatures in order to delegitimise this regime. In response, we will carry out our own referendum in order to delegitimise this regime," he stated, sentiments which sparked criticism from the Kenya Kwanza side.

Azimio Principal Martha Karua on Monday, July 10 however argued that the collection of 10 million signatures was a tally of Kenyan citizens who supported Azimio's protests against the government and not aimed at removing President William Ruto from power, a move critics argued was a tall order.

The protests are anticipated to be among three that will take place across the country simultaneously, potentially crippling vital operations in the country for the day, including transport.
