Former Nation Media Group (NMG) and Standard Group Limited editor, Cyrus Mwelwa, is dead.

His demise was confirmed by Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ezekiel Mutua in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, September 13.

"I have learned with profound shock of the death of a dear friend and long-time colleague Cyrus Mwelwa, formerly of the Nation Media Group and later the Standard Group.

"May God give peace and comfort to the family and may his soul find eternal repose," he wrote, without revealing the cause of his death.

Mwelwa worked as a sub-editor for NMG for eight years from 1995 to 2003 before becoming Standard's editor for one year and eight months (October 2003-May 2005).

He switched to Public Relations (PR) and worked as Head of PR at the East African Portland Cement company for three years.

Mwelwa has since held multiple positions spanning several organizations including Kenya Literature Bureau (KLB), AIG, Ecosafe Ltd, and Africa Leadership Institute.

In December 2019, he became the CEO of Organic Health Media and his responsibilities included Content Strategy & Communication - Nutrition, Health and Wellness, Health Coaching for Corporate Staff, Community Health Partnerships, Open Forums for Health Awareness and Distribution of Natural Health Products.

Mwelwa held a Bachelor's Degree in Communication and Journalism from Moi University and an MBA in Strategic Management from Kenyatta University.

His demise comes as Kenyan media is still coming to terms with the recent loss of Capital FM's sports guru, Sean Cardovillis. A memorial service will be held in his honour on Thursday, September 14, 2023.

The service will serve as a poignant moment for family, friends, colleagues, and fans to remember and celebrate the life of the renowned sports broadcaster.

“Following the demise of our beloved Sean, we, the family, are humbled by the outpouring of love, words of encouragement, and willingness to assist with Sean’s arrangements.

"There will be a private family send-off in the week. Details for a memorial service will be announced shortly. Thank you for understanding and respecting our privacy," the late Cardovillis' family said in a statement.

The family also extended their thanks to those who have offered words of encouragement and support during this trying period, emphasizing the importance of the public’s understanding and consideration of their need for privacy.
