Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu was elevated to a higher role in the Senate after being elected the vice chair of the Standing Committee on National Security, Defence and Foreign Relations.

On Thursday, October 20, she reacted to the new role by thanking her colleagues for electing her as evidence of trust in her to take the reins of the leadership role in the Senate.

"It is indeed a huge honour to be elected as the Vice Chairperson of the Standing Committee on National Security, Defence and Foreign Relations.

“This is an indication of the trust my fellow committee members have in my ability to serve in this capacity over and above my role as a senator,” she wrote.

The nominated senator will deputise the chairperson, Baringo Senator William Cheptumo. Nyamu was nominated to the Senate by the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) alongside seven others, including the party's secretary general, Veronica Maina.

The Standing Committee on National Security, Defence and Foreign Relations has been touted as one of the most powerful committees in the Senate.

According to the Senate Handbook on the operation of committees, the team’s work is to consider all matters relating to national security and foreign relations, disaster reduction and preparedness, home affairs, defence, immigration, and international relations.

It is also the only committee allowed to make more than two foreign trips in one financial year.

The Committee was recently picked for the vetting of Japhet Koome, who was nominated as the next Inspector General of Police by President William Ruto, moments after he announced Hillary Mutyambai's resignation.

Koome will undergo vetting jointly done by the committee and the Departmental Committee on Administration and Internal Affairs of the National Assembly before assuming his position.

Nyamu's role as the vice chair sees her salary go up. She will at the end of every month be paid Ksh710,000 and is entitled to a maximum of an additional Ksh192,000 as the committee vice chair; a total of Ksh902,000.

Committee vice chairs receive Ksh12,000 per meeting, up to a maximum of Ksh192,000 per month, according to the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).

Chairpersons are paid Ksh15,000 per sitting, up to a maximum of Ksh240,000 per month, while ordinary members receive Ksh7,500 per sitting, up to a maximum of Ksh120,000 per month.

Nyamu also gets a motor vehicle reimbursement of Ksh7.55 million to buy a car with an engine capacity not exceeding 3000cc, during her time as a Senator. The vehicle reimbursement is paid to a Member of Parliament once in a parliamentary term.

MPs and Senators are also paid Ksh356,525 per month car maintenance allowance as well as a reimbursement of a claimable mileage of one return journey per week at the rate of Ksh116.63 per kilometre, which will depend on the vehicle's engine capacity of not more than 3000cc.
