National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung'wah has become the second person in a week to accuse former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of being responsible for the recent abductions in the country.

Speaking during the burial of Moses Wetangula's mother on Friday, January 3 in which President William Ruto was in attendance, Ichung'wah claimed Gachagua orchestrated the abductions. These remarks came after Gachagua urged President Ruto to take full responsibility and immediately address the alleged abductions.

Ichung'wah also called out Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, who was also present during the burial and condemned the abductions. He blamed the county boss for not using the powers he had during his tenure as the Police Regional Commander to expose those behind the abductions.

"Gachagua was the orchestrator of abductions so that he could blame President Ruto. Shame on you Governor Natembeya. You cannot complain about abductions when you were the key abductor of Kenyans under the last regime," Ichung'wah said.

The remarks were part of a fiery speech aimed at Natembeya, whom the Kikuyu Member of Parliament (MP) accused of incitement. He urged Natembeya to assist the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in solving the abduction cases if he had any knowledge of the abductors.

“It is not to say that there are no abductions. Abductions are there. Governor Natembeya, if you know the abductors, you are an officer and you have been a regional commissioner. Give information to the DCI for them to investigate.

“I want to ask you, Governor Natembeya, you were a regional commissioner the other day when people were abducted and killed in Kerio Valley. So at that time, you did not know Kenyans’ lives were valuable? Let me tell you today in broad daylight, the politics you are doing of dividing Kenyans on tribal lines and incitement, you will not succeed. Shame on you!” Ichung'wah remarked.

Furthermore, the vocal legislator accused Natembeya of being behind the killings where bodies were discovered in the River Yala and the Mau evictions.

"When you killed people and dumped them at River Yala, you were the Regional Commissioner in charge of abductions and murdering Kenyans. Shame on you," Ichung'wah condemned Natembeya.

Natembeya on his part earlier accused some of denying that there were no abductions and that some Kenyans were faking abductions, further maintaining that it was unfortunate for leaders to claim and that abduction cases should not be concealed.

“I say this with a very heavy heart. It is unfortunate for a leader to stand here and say that people are abducting themselves and killing themselves. Our children are getting lost and getting abducted and some are being killed.

"That is the position. We should not cover the basics. Even the president has said he will stop the abductions. People should not be abducted or killed because of insults on social media,” Natembeya stated.

Natembeya received a hostile reception at the burial, where the supremacy battle between him and Wetangula was evident as mourners jeered at him attempting to stop him from making his speech. After several interventions, the crowd allowed him to speak.

Gachagua on his part has been on the frontlines, condemning the abductions and piling pressure on the government to intervene and expedite the process of finding those behind them and the release of the abductees.

However, the first accusations against him that he was behind the abductions came from Kibwezi West Member of Parliament (MP) Mwengi Mutuse, who successfully moved a motion in Parliament to impeach Rigathi Gachagua as Deputy President. On December 30, 2024, Mutuse claimed to have received credible information that Gachagua was collaborating with unknown individuals within President Ruto's government and former officials to carry out activities meant to destabilise the country.

Protests occurred on December 30 in an attempt to push the government to release Kenyans who mysteriously went missing during the month. Many believe more than five people were abducted including Steve Mbisi from Machakos, Billy Mwangi (Embu), Peter Muteti (Nairobi), Bernard Kavuli (Nairobi), Gideon Kibet alias Kibet Bull (Nairobi) and Rony Kiplang'at (Kiambu).
