The Ministry of Education has revised the half-term dates for Term Two to make up for the lost learning period caused by school closures due to flooding.

Education Principal Secretary Dr. Belio Kipsang announced on Wednesday, May 29 that learners in pre-primary, primary, and secondary schools will now break for half-term from June 26 to June 28, 2024.

The initial half-term date had been set to run from June 20-23 2024.

Schools were originally scheduled to reopen on April 29, 2024, but due to heavy rains, the reopening was postponed first to May 6 and then to May 13 as weather conditions improved.

Dr. Kipsang, in a circular to all County Directors of Education, emphasized the need to communicate these changes to all Head Teachers and Principals.

He noted, “The change may require adjustments on planned activities and schedules.”

In addition, all boarding school learners are expected to report back on June 30, 2024.

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu mentioned that while second-term dates might be extended to recover lost time, the national examination dates will remain unchanged.

"Particularly for Form Four candidates, we will see how we can recover time lost by extending the term by a few days.

"The exam calendar will remain the same as KCSE and KPSEA will be taken in the normal time from November," Machogu said.

Due to the flooding, some schools in counties such as Homa Bay, Kisumu, and Tana River remained closed even after the general reopening on May 13.

President William Ruto earlier announced that all schools would reopen for the second term on Monday, May 13, 2024.

Schools were meant to reopen on Monday, May 6, having been postponed initially on Monday, May 29 owing to the flooding crisis in the country.

The floods had left over 200 people dead, over 200,000 displaced, and nearly 2,000 schools in ruins.
