The government through the Ministry of Education has announced that all schools across the country will be reopened on Monday, January 8, 2024.

Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang, who spoke during the release of the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) results, revealed that this will be the first time learners will study for three successive terms with three breaks in between.

This will also mark the first time the school calendar is reverting to the normal cycle following its disruption by the Coronavirus system and the August 2022 general elections.

“We are opening our schools on the 8th of January for the new year,” stated PS Kipsang.

The Ministry had on Friday, October 13 notified all County, Sub-County and Regional Directors of Education regarding the 2024 school calendar.

Pre-primary, primary, and secondary schools will open for the first term on January 8, 2024, and close on April 5, 2024, a period of 13 weeks.

In between the first term will be a half-term break from February 29 to March 3, 2024. Schools will then close for the April Holidays from April 8-26, 2023, after which they will resume studies for Term Two.

Term Two will commence on April 29, 2024 and run until August 2, 2024, a period of 14 weeks. In between the second term will be a half-term break from June 20-23, 2024.

Learners will then proceed for the August Holidays lasting from August 5-23, 2024, a period of three weeks before resuming for the final term of 2024.

Term Three has the shortest period in the calendar, commencing on August 26, 2024, until October 25, 2024, a period of nine weeks. It is worth it to note that there is no half-term break during this period.

Learners will proceed for the December Holidays from October 28, 2024, until January 3, 2025, a period of 10 weeks.

The super-long holidays will pave the way for the examinations period, with the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) and Kenya Intermediate Level Education Assessment (KILEA) examinations running from October 28-31, 2024.

KPSEA is administered under the Competence Based Curriculum (CBC) as a replacement for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE), which comes to an end this year after a 38-year spell.

Following suit will be the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams that will run from November 4-22, 2024.

The teachers’ training colleges, on the other hand, will open for term one from January 8, 2024, to April 5, 2024, and thereafter head on holidays from April 8-26, 2024.

Term two will open on April 29, 2024, and go until August 2, 2024, with the holidays thereafter scheduled for August 5-30, 2024.

The final term will go for 11 weeks from August 26 to November 8, before the long December holidays set for November 11, 2024, to January 3, 2025.
