Former Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed's home in Kakamega County was brought down on Wednesday, January 10 by the government.

Locals at the posh Milimani Estate in a video seen by Viral Tea could be seen scrambling for remaining materials from the former CS's home after it was demolished.

Speaking to the media, a resident in Kakamega expressed that though he was caught by surprise by the demolition, he was glad that the ordeal of lack of job opportunities would be addressed.

The property was reportedly demolished to pave the way for the construction of President William Ruto's Affordable Housing project.

"I woke up in the morning and was surprised to see what was happening, but on the other hand, I am happy because we are looking for work.

"There are no jobs, and we have education. At least, we won't go to bed hungry because we have found something,” the resident stated.

He added that it made sense for the land to be ceded for the construction of President Ruto's pet project, which would provide benefits for the residents.

He added, "If you look at this land, it is as big as three hectares, and one person lives here. The government can build here, and at least, we can benefit from it. I am grateful to the government for the work it is doing.”

Since former President Uhuru Kenyatta handed over power to President William Ruto in September 2022, Mohamed has largely kept off the public limelight.

She was the Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs from May 2013 to February 2018 before being moved to the Ministry of Education and a year later was transferred to the Ministry of Sports.

The demolition comes barely a month after the government demolished houses in Kakamega’s Milimani Estate to give space for the housing project. Among those who were affected by the demolitions was Lurambi MP Bishop Titus Khamala.

The demolitions across the country drew the attention of Azimio Leader Raila Odinga who accused the Kenya Kwanza government of developing a tendency to resort to forceful evictions and demolition of settlements as a preferred way of acquiring or settling land disputes.

"From Mavoko to Kakamega, Thika, and Mombasa and today in Voi, the government seems to be pursuing a policy of evicting people from their settlements using utmost pain inflicted at the most desperate moments," fired Raila on Saturday, January 6.

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader lamented the ill-timing of the evictions amid tough economic times and worse, with less than two days to the reopening of schools for Term One.

Raila therefore called for the government to stop the demolitions with immediate effect in Voi as well as in any other part of Kenya.
