Sports Cabinet Secretary (CS) Salim Mvurya has revealed that the government capped the prices of tickets to the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 to affordable levels to convince more Kenyans to attend the matches.

Mvurya was speaking on Wednesday, July 17 during the official handover of the Nyayo Stadium to the local organising committee (LOC) for CHAN and the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in the company of his Defence counterpart, Soipan Tuya.

The Sports CS cited missed opportunities for Kenya to host AFCON, one of which was in the 1990s, and given that CHAN 2024 will be a historic occasion for Kenya, he called upon Kenyans to turn up in numbers during the matches to be held at Nyayo and Kasarani Stadiums.

“We had the chance to host Afcon in 1996 but we couldn’t…again we tried in 2018 and we didn’t succeed. So, this year’s competition is a historic occasion and so we want to mobilise every Kenyan to go to the stadia. That’s why we have kept the tickets at very low prices,” Mvurya said.

The tournament, set to take place in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, is close to two weeks away from kickoff on August 2, 2025.

Ticket Prices

CHAN Local Organising Committee (LOC) chairman Nicholas Musonye had previously confirmed that all tickets will be sold exclusively online. Regular tickets will be priced at Ksh 200, VIP seats at Ksh 500, and VVIP passes at Ksh 1,000. “Each ticket will be valid for one match and will be sold online through a platform that will be communicated soon,” Musonye had announced.

Musonye voiced optimism that the improved online system will help eliminate ticket fraud and enhance the overall experience for fans. He encouraged supporters to plan ahead and make use of the ease offered by digital ticketing.

Whereas some reports claimed that the ticket sales would go live from July 16, no official communication has been made yet on if and what online ticketing platform Kenyans interested in attending the matches can purchase the tickets from, at the time this story went to publication.

Still, football fans are being urged to buy their tickets early when sales begin to avoid missing out. With high-profile teams set to play, a strong lineup of matches and the popularity the tournament is set to generate in the three countries, many games are expected to sell out fast.

Kenya's ticket prices are however higher than those of Uganda and Tanzania, with Uganda capping match ticket prices at Ksh 130 for Regular seats, Ksh 260 for VIP, and Ksh 390 for VVIP access. In Tanzania, fans will pay Ksh 50 for Regular tickets, Ksh 130 for VIP, and Ksh 230 for VVIP seats.
