Popular activist Hanifa Adan is among five new columnists who have joined the Nation Media Group (NMG). This announcement was made on Tuesday, April 22, amidst a restructuring exercise undertaken by the regional media house.

Hanifa, a vocal critic of the Kenya Kwanza government on social media, has been brought on board as a columnist for the Daily Nation. On Tuesday, April 22, she dropped her debut piece titled We're not going anywhere, and we won't wait for your permission.

Joining her at the Kimathi Street newsroom is Nelson Amenya, who made headlines across the country for exposing key details of the Adani deal involving the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

"In a time of rising questions, louder voices and stubborn systems, Nation Media Group presents a new generation of columnists. They are thought rebels, policy disruptors, truth tellers and justice architects. They don't play safe, they write to wake us up," NMG announced.

Other columnists who joined the media house include Kwamchetsi Makokha, Lewis Ngunyi and Dr Stellah Bosire.

This comes after Viral Tea exclusively broke the news of the changes at NMG. In an internal memo signed by Group Editor-In-Chief Joe Ageyo, it was revealed that the changes to NMG's structure will see some roles introduced, others abolished, and others renamed.

The shake-up primarily targeted the editorial team, as the company looks to ramp up digital innovation and strengthen audience engagement, especially in key markets like Tanzania and Uganda, where it already has a strong footprint.

NMG reshuffled its leadership structure, with 14 editors and reporters affected. Victor Mushi, who has been the Executive Editor in charge of the content team in Tanzania, was appointed to the Group role of Executive Editor, Digital Innovation.

Harry Misiko, who was the Lead Editor, News Desk, was appointed as Managing Editor, Content Strategy, in charge of all the content hubs and the News Desk.

James Smart, who had been Managing Editor, Production & Partnerships and a senior News Anchor, was redesignated as Managing Editor, Broadcast and New Media, part of the wider organisational strategy to accelerate video content generation and entrench new formats in NMG's content offering across the newsroom.

Furthermore, Washington Gikunju, who was the Managing Editor, Planning & Content Hubs, was tasked with the role of Managing Editor, Publishing and will be expected to lead the consolidated workstream, which brings together all the print publications (including Production) together with their respective websites and newsletters.

In other changes, Alex Ndegwa took the consolidated role of Lead Editor, Daily Nation (Print and Digital i.e. Nation.Africa) while Mike Owuor assumed the leadership of weekend titles and their respective digital versions, as Lead Editor, Weekend.

Jackson Mutinda became the Lead Editor, The EastAfrican, in charge of print and digital versions of the publication, while John Kiplagat, who had been Lead Editor, Print, was redesignated to Lead Editor, Production to oversee the entire production function.

Caroline Njung'e, who was Chief Production Editor, was appointed Chief Quality Editor to oversee quality assurance of all content going into NMG's platforms. Zeynab Wandati moved from Editor, Sustainability to the new role of Editor, Climate & Young Audiences, to strengthen the production of mobile-first video content (MOJO) and other youth-facing formats, in addition to driving climate content.

Dorcas Odumbe, who was the Gender Editor, was appointed the Editor, Health & Gender, while Kennedy Kimanthi, who was the Regional Editor in Nakuru, has been transferred to Nairobi to become the News Editor at the Integrated News Desk.

Brygettes Ngana, who had been a reporter in the Sustainability Hub, took over as the Regional Editor, Nakuru, while Patrick Lang'at, who was the Weekend Editor, was redesignated to Weekend & Planning Editor.
