Kitui East Member of Parliament (MP) Nimrod Mbai on Monday, July 17 expressed no regrets on allegedly assaulting a Kenya Power employee who disconnected an illegal power connection at his home in Kitengela, Kajiado County.

Speaking to the media, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) lawmaker voiced his support for the incident, indicating that his constituents even supported the action on social media.

Exuding a 'I don't care' stance on the matter, Mbai added that he would handle similar matters the same way he handled this controversial one which drew uproar from stakeholders of Kenya Power as well as political leaders and members of the public across the country.

"If you go to Facebook and see how my people are commenting on the clip, it is the right thing to do you have to fight for your right, you can't get to a point of harassing and abusing people but a man has to do what he needs to do for things to move," the brash MP said.

"Given another opportunity I will handle it the same way and that's me I cannot change."

Mbai had honoured summons by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) where he also denied being the one captured in a viral six-and-a-half-minute video angrily insulting the official who was reportedly seeking to disconnect an illegal power line at his home.

He denied even assaulting the official claiming that he was a man of God, and further claiming that the footage was heavily edited to make it look like it was him.

Mbai also denied being remorseful of the incident, claiming that the clip which went viral on Tuesday, July 4 was not the original one.

"I never assaulted anyone. Do I look like someone who can assault anybody? I am a renowned pastor. How conversant are you with the ICT and videos and copy-pasting and all these things around how you can play around with a video clip?" he posed.

"You are talking of a clip which has been played around with so how can I be remorseful? This clip is not the original clip. What they tried to pass on social media there is a lot of editing on it," he claimed.

He nonetheless praised his constituents for showing their support, claiming that he is known as an individual who takes no prisoners.

Mbai was arrested hours after the assault in Mavoko and held at Kitengela Police Station and is set to be arraigned at Kajiado Law Courts.

Earlier, a group of Kenya Power employees from the Kitengela Branch trooped to the police station in solidarity with their colleague who was assaulted by the UDA legislator.

Kenya Power Managing Director and CEO, Joseph Siror later stated that the incident formed an emerging trend of violent attacks on employees doing their work, which he termed as ”regrettable”.

“While working to weed the network of illegal and dangerous connections, we regrettably note an emerging trend of violent attacks against our staff. The latest of these incidents happened on Monday, July 3, in Kitengela where our staff were attacked by the Kitui East Member of Parliament, Nimrod Mbai”.

“We have taken up this issue with the relevant authorities and the matter is now before the courts. As an entity that prioritizes the welfare of its staff and the public, we condemn this incident and we wish to categorically state that we do not condone any form of violence, at least not on our staff while on official duty," stated Siror in part.

Siror further asserted that the organisation will not relent on its push to expose individuals erecting illegal and dangerous power connections, arguing that they paralyze the quality of the power supply and ultimately cause huge losses to the company.
