Nimrod Mbai, the current Member of Parliament for Kitui East Constituency was arrested on Wednesday, July 5 after being caught on camera allegedly attacking a Kenya Power employee.

The legislator was apprehended in Mavoko, a day after he was filmed angrily insulting the official who was reportedly seeking to disconnect an illegal power line at his home.

According to a police Occurrence Book (OB) seen by Viral Tea, the second-term MP was held at Kitengela Police Station and is set to be arraigned at Kajiado Law Courts.

Earlier, a group of Kenya Power employees from the Kitengela Branch trooped to the police station in solidarity with their colleague who was assaulted by the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) lawmaker.

"Today at around 0830hrs, A group of Kenya Power employees numbering about 30 from the Kitengela Branch protested from their offices in EPZ to Kitengela police Station against the above MP who assaulted one of them on 3rd July 2023. They demanded to know if the suspect had been apprehended.

"They were assured that indeed the suspect was arrested and available in Court at Kajiado. They appreciated the effort made by the officers. They later dispersed peacefully. No one was injured during the protest," read the OB.

Police on Tuesday, July 4 raided Mbai's home in Kitengela in an exercise carried out by Kenya Power officials, with equipment belonging to the monopoly firm inclusive of cables and a metre box recovered from the home under construction.

At the time of the raid, the MP was away from his home, with reports indicating that he had returned to Nairobi. However, police managed to arrest two of his aides due to the illegal connection of electricity.

Isinya Sub-County Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss, Benjamin Ndebai, revealed that the assaulted Kenya Power engineer had filed a report at their station.

Mbai also faces investigations over the misuse of his firearm as he was filmed attempting to brandish his gun.

The Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK), through its President, Erick Ohaga, called for the revocation of the firearm ownership license of the MP.

Kenya University Student Organization (KUSO) Deputy President, Rachael Tabitha on Tuesday, July 4 demanded National Assembly Speaker, Moses Wetangula reprimand Mbai for his actions.

"We cannot tolerate violence or allow those in power to act with impunity. It is time for our leaders to set an example and ensure that no one is above the law, regardless of their position or influence," she stated.
