Kitui East Member of Parliament (MP) Nimrod Mbai is on the spot after a video emerged on Tuesday, July 4 showing him assaulting a Kenya Power official in Kitengela, Kajiado County.

In a six and a half-minute viral video circulating social media platforms and seen by Viral Tea, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) lawmaker could be seen angrily insulting the official who was reportedly seeking to disconnect an illegal power line at his home.

He, alongside other Kenya Power officials, claimed that the MP had erected an illegal power line at the premises spanning more than a kilometre.

Here is the video courtesy of Citizen TV:

"You have to go home guys, you are going home, I'm telling you. Take it from me, I won't let you go," he could be heard directing the officials.

Mbai claimed that Kenya Power was tormenting Kitengela residents through their crackdown on illegal power connections before intimidating them in his spree of insults, daring the officials to take additional action.

The lawmaker further reminded the officer of President William Ruto's directive in January stopping Kenya Power from disconnecting Kenyans from the grid over illegal connections and that it should be their responsibility to see to it that all Kenyans have electricity

"The President said this, as a Kenya Power official, you find someone connecting electricity, install for him or her a meter then you count and collect money from that person, not to disconnect. These are not my instructions, you are flouting the instructions of the President," Mbai added to the official.

The MP ordered the official to call his supervisors before he turned the heat on him and started slapping him during the incident, causing a commotion.

Mbai likewise reached for and attempted to draw his gun that was tucked in his back pocket during his fit of rage. The KPLC officers however managed to disconnect the power line after arriving on the premises alongside the police.

The cops further managed to arrest two workers employed at the palatial home which is currently under construction.

The power company officials also reportedly recovered a power meter and additional power cables from the Rural Electrification Authority at the MP's home.

On January 27, 2023, President Ruto directed that if anyone is found using electricity, regardless of how they got connected, Kenya Power should have a meter connected and start charging them for the electricity used.

"My good friends at the Kenya Power and lighting company, it is your responsibility to connect Kenyans to electricity. If you find a citizen has been connected to electricity by whatever means go and put a meter and begin to charge them. Don't switch off a whole estate," he said.
