Why Gachagua Could Be Arrested When He Returns From US

This comes just days after Gachagua, speaking at a public forum in the US, claimed that President William Ruto secretly met with three Al Shabaab leaders at night to discuss undisclosed matters.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua could be arrested by Kenyan authorities when he returns from his tour of the United States (US), according to Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen.

Murkomen who spoke on Saturday, August 9 during an Economic Empowerment Program in Keiyo South revealed that the former DP will record a statement once he lands back in the country.

His remarks come just days after Gachagua, speaking at a public forum in the US, claimed that President William Ruto secretly met with three Al Shabaab leaders at night to discuss undisclosed matters.

“I saw another man who sat where you are sitting the other day, disparaging our country, talking about issues of insecurity as if it were a joke. He thinks that he is going to parade issues of terrorism in America for him to get votes.

"Because he has said that he has information and he knows and that he has an agent who is holding meetings with Al-Shabaab, as soon as he lands in Kenya, he must record a statement to tell us exactly which meetings he is having with terrorists,” Murkomen stated.

Murkomen criticised the former Deputy President’s conduct, calling it unbelievable and questioning how he ever rose to the position. He stressed the need for individuals in public office to uphold the responsibility the role demands.

He also cast doubt on Gachagua’s presidential ambitions, questioning his ability to lead the country while making such remarks.

“Can that person really become Kenya’s President? He did not even manage to finish his full term as Deputy President, and then he comes here to tell us stories of ‘Wantam.’

"He could not even complete half his term. In Kenya’s history, it does not even look like he was ever a Deputy President. Ilioshwa kabisa with the impeachment that took place, and now he comes here to lecture us. So we will be very firm,” the Interior CS stated.

Similar sentiments were echoed by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, who was also in attendance, arguing that the security of the country could not be played around with.

While addressing a Democracy for Citizens Party event in Nyeri on Wednesday, Gachagua alleged that President Ruto held a secret meeting with Al-Shabaab operatives in Mandera, a town near the Kenya–Somalia border. He claimed the meeting raises major concerns over national security and the country’s counterterrorism strategy.

“It is shocking and unacceptable that the Head of State would engage in secret talks with terrorists who have claimed countless Kenyan lives. This betrayal endangers every Kenyan and undermines the sacrifices made by our security forces,” Gachagua stated.

The former deputy president, now at the helm of the Democracy for Citizens Party after a major fallout with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), also took issue with the president’s recent move to suspend vetting for foreign nationals applying for Kenyan identification documents.

He cautioned that the eased policy could pave the way for increased terrorist infiltration. “Suspending ID vetting is a dangerous move that could allow foreign extremists to acquire Kenyan documents and travel to other countries, including the United States. This poses a grave threat not only to Kenya’s national security but to global peace,” he said.

Before his departure to the US, Gachagua did reveal that he was aware of a plot by President Ruto's administration to arrest him at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), blocking him from travelling abroad.

Speaking during a press conference on Wednesday, July 9, Gachagua dared Ruto's allies to live up to their threats and order for his arrest.
