Veteran journalist Saddique Shaban has revealed that he was assaulted by an officer from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) as he was capturing an incident whereby a foreigner caused drama at Ad Life Plaza in Nairobi’s Kilimani area.

Shaban described the incident on Wednesday, August 3 whereby the foreign man was in the company of a woman and had just left Club Gemini, located within the shopping facility.

They went into a local supermarket whereby they reportedly broke a glass of sauce and paid for it.

However, it was the manner in which they were asked to pay for it which angered the couple.

Enraged, they began attacking the employees of the shop and the guards, with the confrontation spilling to the exit where security guards surrounded the angry man.

He could be heard in the video hurling unprintable insults as the guards moved to restrain him, but he became violent, prompting the guards to use force to stop him.

"Early morning drama at Ad Life Plaza, Kilimani. A white man, yelling racist words- F and N bombs- physically assaulted a security guard and got an instant serving of karma, alongside a Kenyan female friend," he wrote.

The confrontation grabbed the attention of members of the public who tried to stop the fight while others joined in beating the foreigner.

A woman was heard urging the guards to pin him down just as the woman, missing a wig, recollected herself for round two.

By then, police officers in plain clothes had arrived to quickly restrain them, but even they had a tough time getting him to calm down as they handcuffed him before taking him away. The identities of the two were yet to be revealed.

In the midst of the altercation, the DCI officer approached Shaban and took his phone plus identity card. The journalist added that he was assaulted and fled with the credential while demanding him to erase the footage.

He urged members of the public to help him track down the officer, whose photo he also shared online.

“Quick police action saved the couple from further wrath of the public. The intoxicated duo were taken away by plainclothes officers who assaulted me in the process of filming this and confiscated my identity card shortly after the last frame.

“If anyone knows this policeman, DCI officer alleged to be from Kilimani, please let me know. He assaulted me and fled with my identification card. Demanded that I erase the footage, seeking support from bodaboda riders. They declined and told him journalism isn't a crime,” he said.
